Medical Description

Afrezza inhalation kit is used to help control blood sugar in adults with diabetes, especially the rise around meals. It contains human insulin, a hormone that helps move sugar from the blood into body cells. Inhaled insulin enters the bloodstream through the lungs and lowers blood sugar, while the supplied inhaler delivers the powder through the mouth. Afrezza inhalation kit is used with a meal plan and physical activity as directed, and it is not suitable for people with chronic lung disease.

Uses

  • Diabetes in adults: Inhaled human insulin helps control blood sugar around meals as part of a prescribed diabetes treatment plan.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Afrezza inhalation kit. Do not use it during an episode of low blood sugar or if you have asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is not suitable for treating diabetic ketoacidosis. Tell your doctor if you smoke or recently stopped smoking because smoking can change insulin absorption.

Side effects

  • Low blood sugar: Insulin can lower blood sugar too far, causing sweating, shaking, hunger, weakness or confusion; use fast-acting sugar and seek urgent help if severe.
  • Cough: The inhaled powder may irritate the throat or airways and trigger coughing after use; seek medical help if breathing becomes difficult.
  • Weight gain: Improved use of sugar by the body may increase weight in some people; tell your doctor about rapid or unexpected weight gain.
  • Swelling: Insulin may cause fluid retention, noticed as swelling of the ankles or hands; report sudden or worsening swelling.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Insulin needs may change during pregnancy, so blood sugar monitoring and medical supervision are important.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Human insulin is generally compatible with breastfeeding, but your insulin needs may change. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding and monitor blood sugar as advised.

Driving

Driving

Afrezza inhalation kit may affect driving if it causes low or high blood sugar. Check your blood sugar and do not drive if you feel dizzy, confused, weak or faint.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol unless your doctor says it is acceptable. Alcohol can make blood sugar harder to control and may increase the risk of low blood sugar.

Directions for Use

Use Afrezza inhalation kit exactly as taught by your doctor or nurse. Load the cartridge into the supplied inhaler and inhale it through your mouth before a meal as instructed. Do not inject the powder or share the inhaler. A caregiver may be taught how to help you use it at home.

Storage and disposal

Keep unopened cartridges refrigerated as directed on the pack and protect them from heat and light. Follow the pack instructions for cartridges kept at room temperature. Keep the inhaler clean and dry, away from children. Dispose of used cartridges and the inhaler according to local medical-waste guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Check your blood sugar as advised and keep a fast-acting source of sugar available for low blood sugar.
  • Learn warning signs of low blood sugar, such as sweating, shaking, hunger and confusion.
  • Use Afrezza inhalation kit with your meal plan and physical activity plan.
  • Do not drive if your blood sugar is too low or too high, or if you feel confused or unwell.
  • Tell your doctor about any new cough or breathing difficulty.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much insulin can cause low blood sugar, with sweating, shaking, hunger, weakness, fast heartbeat, confusion or fainting. Treat low blood sugar as your doctor has explained and seek urgent help for severe symptoms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Human insulin replaces or supplements the insulin your body needs. It helps body cells take sugar from the blood and use it for energy, lowering blood sugar after meals.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Afrezza inhalation kit works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, medicines for diabetes, beta blockers, corticosteroids, water tablets, thyroid conditions and medicines that change potassium levels can alter blood sugar or hide warning signs of low blood sugar.

Interactions with food items

Meals affect blood sugar and insulin needs. Follow your doctor's instructions about linking Afrezza inhalation kit with meals and monitor blood sugar as advised.
