Molecule Description

Teneligliptin is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. People with uncontrolled diabetes are at risk of suffering from various health complications. Thus, managing the blood sugar levels, along with blood cholesterol and blood pressure is very essential. While taking teneligliptin you must be cautious of your diet and should also exercise frequently. Teneligliptin is available in the form of a tablet. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about all the medicines and supplements you take and all the conditions or diseases you suffer from, before starting teneligliptin.

Contraindications

When should one not use Teneligliptin

  • If you are allergic to teneligliptin or similar medicines
  • If you are to undergo surgery or are suffering from a serious physical injury and insulin injection is being used to control your blood sugar.
  • If your blood sugar levels are uncontrolled and complications like ketosis (serious metabolism-related problem), diabetic coma or pre-coma have developed.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have problems with your heart, liver or kidneys.
  • You have a known history of pancreatitis, or you develop sudden pain in the stomach or back.
  • You are taking other medicines to treat diabetes like insulin and glimepiride.
  • You have undergone any stomach or intestine operation.
  • You are malnourished, are on a diet, are having irregular meals, exercising vigorously or consume alcohol in excess.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

  • While eating, glucose concentration increases in our bodies.
  • In response to that small intestine increases the release of certain chemicals called incretins.
  • These play an important role in controlling blood glucose.
  • But these are rapidly degraded by an enzyme (DPPP-4).
  • Teneligliptin inhibits the action of DPP-4 enzymes and slows down the rapid degradation of incretins.
  • It also increases insulin synthesis by the pancreas and decreases glucagon levels which are a counter-hormone of insulin, thereby further decreasing blood sugar levels.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way teneligliptin works, or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
  • Especially if you are taking medicines to treat diabetes, heart problems, psychiatric illnesses, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, fever and pain (salicylates like aspirin), are taking steroids, adrenaline.
  • Medicines used for the treatment of heart rhythm disorder should be used with caution while taking teneligliptin.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, fainting, sweating, tremors, confusion etc. Seek immediate medical help in case of an overdose.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed any dose of teneligliptin then take it as soon as you remember. If it is already time for the next dose then skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
