Molecule Description

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor (ACE stands for Angiotensin Converting Enzyme).

Uses

  • To treat high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • To treat heart failure (congestive heart failure)

Contraindications

When should one not use Lisinopril

  • Do not take this medicine if you have any allergy to Lisinopril or other ACE inhibitors such as Captopril if you have diabetes
  • Also, this medicine is not be used in patients who are taking blood lowering medication containing Aliskiren and medicines used to treat long-time heart failure like Valsartan

Side effects

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing, swelling tongue or difficulty in swallowing
  • Increased in liver enzymes
  • Yellowing of skin or eye (jaundice)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness

Do not use Lisinopril if you are pregnant. If you are pregnant, stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately. This medicine can cause injury or even death of the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester. Use effective birth control while taking Lisinopril.

  • You have diabetes

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

ACE inhibitors block the enzyme called Angiotensin Converting Enzyme and thereby lowers the blood pressure by widening the blood vessels. This allows the blood to flow more efficiently and reduces the effort needed to pump blood around the body.

Interactions with other medicines

Lisinopril may interact with medicines such as Aspirin, Aliskiren, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs like Ibuprofen and Indomethacin, Diuretics like Furosemide, Torsemide and antidepressants.

Interactions with food items

If you are on treatment with Lisinopril, then avoid supplements containing potassium as they interact with it and increase the risk of side effects.
