Molecule Description

Linezolid is an antibiotic of the Oxazolidinones group that works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria that cause infections.

Uses

  • Pneumonia
  • Skin infections
  • Bacterial infections as per doctor’s discretion

Contraindications

When should one not use Linezolid

  • If you are allergic to Linezolid
  • If you are taking medicines called Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI) like Phenelzine, Isocarboxazid, Selegiline, Moclobemide or have taken these within the last two weeks
  • If you are breastfeeding
  • Kidney or liver disease

Side effects

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea - bloody or watery
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
  • Constipation
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Allergy – facial swelling, difficulty in breathing (serious)
  • Anemia
  • Vision disturbances- blurred vision, change in colour vision
  • Bleeding from nose, mouth, etc.
  • Easy bruising
  • Fits (uncommon)

There are no adverse effects noted while using Linezolid during pregnancy. But scientific data on absolute safety of it in pregnancy is sparse. Hence, risk cannot be ruled out. It is better to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Do not breastfeed when taking Linezolid because it passes into breast milk and could affect the baby.

Driving

Linezolid can lead to dizziness and vision problems. If this happens, do not drive.

Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol, especially draught beers and wine as it can cause an increase in blood pressure.

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have bruise and bleed easily
  • You are anaemic
  • You have a history of fits
  • You have liver problems or kidney problems or undergoing dialysis
  • You have diarrhoea
  • Visual disturbances like blurred vision, changes in colour vision, difficulty in seeing detail or if your field of view becomes restricted
  • If you develop diarrhea while taking Linezolid. If this becomes persistent or you notice blood or mucus in stools, immediately stop taking Linezolid and consult your doctor

Interactions with other medicines

Tell your doctor if you are taking or have taken within the last two weeks the following medicines: Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors ( MAOIs, e.g. Phenelzine, Isocarboxazid, Selegiline, Moclobemide). These may be used to treat depression or Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma medicines, medicines that can raise blood pressure, e.g., Levodopa or diet pills, stimulants, or ADHD medications, cough or cold medication (Pseudoephedrine or Phenylpropanolamine) and Rifampicin, certain antidepressants known as Tricyclics or SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). There are many of these including Amitriptyline, Citalopram, Clomipramine, Dosulepin, Doxepin, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Imipramine, Lofepramine, Paroxetine, Sertralin.

Interactions with food items

Avoid eating large amounts of cheese, yeast extracts or soya bean extracts e.g. soy sauce. It is because Linezolid may react with a substance called Tyramine which is naturally present in some foods. This interaction may cause an increase in your blood pressure.

Dosage

Overdose

If you happen to take an overdose of the medicine, kindly seek emergency medical care immediately. The effects of an overdose may be lethal and need immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms may be – nose or mouth bleeding, etc. easy bruising, vertigo, etc.

Missed a Dose

Take the forgotten tablet as early as you remember. Take the next pill 12 hours after this and continue taking your tablets every 12 hours.

Linezolid should be taken in the exact dose as advised by the physician. The liquid medicine should be measured in a measuring device and then consumed and should not be taken on approximate measurements. Shake the oral suspension before every use. Do not take more than the recommended dosage of this medicine. Overdose of Linezolid can cause serious problems. Take Linezolid with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Complete the full course of treatment as advised by the doctor. You will start feeling better within the first few doses but do not stop the medicine in between.

Inform the doctor about your detailed medical and surgical history. Inform your physician if you have any kidney or liver disease, adrenal gland tumor, weak immune system, high blood pressure, epilepsy or a history of seizures or stroke, bone marrow suppression, mental illness or diabetes.
