Lindane

Molecule Description

Lindane is typically used as a lotion or in the topical solution form to treat lice infestations in the head and also for scabies. Lindane helps kill the lice and nits. Typically, the topical form of Lindane is used in the treatment of scabies and the shampoo is used in the treatment of pubic lice and head lice.

It is used to treat head and pubic lice (tiny insects that lay eggs on hair shafts).

  • If you experience skin irritation (like open wounds, rashes, cuts or sores) 
  • Allergic to the medicine
  • Premature infants
  • Skin conditions (like psoriasis, dermatitis)
  • HIV infection
  • History of serious head injury
  • Brain tumours
  • Liver disease

Side effects of Lindane

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Allergic reactions may include rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, throat)
  • Severe dizziness
  • Numbness of skin and tingling
  • Hair loss

Pregnancy

How Does It Work?

Lindane works by killing the lice and nits. It is known to be a toxin affecting nerves (neurotoxin) and an organochlorine insecticide, with properties similar to the pesticide DDT.
