Butenafine
Molecule Description
Butenafine is a topical ‘antifungal’ used to treat common fungal infections of
the skin such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and jock’s itch. Topical means for external application on skin surface only.
Uses of Butenafine
- To treat skin infections due to fungus, such as:
- Jock itch (tinea cruris) – near the genitals, inner thighs and buttocks
- Ringworm (tinea corporis) – fungal infections on hairless skin, especially on arms and legs
- Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) – infection between foot fingers, e.g. the toes
- Discolored patches on the chest and the back (tinea versicolor)
Contraindications of Butenafine
When should one not use Butenafine
- Do not use this medicine if you have allergy to Butenafine or any of its ingredients
- For treatment of nail, scalp or vaginal infections
Side effects of Butenafine
Common side effects of this drug are:
Irritation, burning or stinging sensation, rashes and itching on skin which comes in contact with clothes, watches, etc. (contact dermatitis), redness, urging to scratch (pruritus) at the applied areas....

Pregnancy

Can I take Butenafine during pregnancy?

Enough data is not available to prove if Butenafine harms the unborn baby. You are advised to speak to the doctor and let him decide if he feels it necessary. But, remember to inform the doctor if you get pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Breast Feeding

Can I take Butenafine while breastfeeding?

It is unknown if Butenafine secretes in breast milk. Your doctor must decide if it is best to use or to avoid. Do not take this medicine without prescription, especially during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Driving

Can I drive if I have consumed Butenafine?

It is unknown, but it is unlikely that Butenafine can affect your driving ability.
Alcohol

Can I consume alcohol with Butenafine?

It is unknown if Butenafine interacts with alcohol but one must note that liquor delays the process of healing and may increase the side effects.

- Use Butenafine with caution if the patient is sensitive to other similar antifungals such as Terbenafine, Naftifine, etc.
- Inform the doctor if you ever had a severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, lips and throat resulting in swallowing and breathing problems, with or without rashes, itching, skin peeling, etc....
Mode of Action of Butenafine
How Does It Work?
Butenafine works by blocking the formation of an essential component (Ergosterol) of the cell wall of the fungus. Without the cell wall, the fungus dies and the infection is in control.

Dosage of Butenafine
Overdose
Unintentional overdose may not be harmful. But speak to your doctor if any symptoms such as burning, itching, rashes or redness appear.
Missed a Dose
If you miss any dose, take it as early as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosage schedule. Do not over apply or use more medicine to compensate for a missed application....

Q: Is there anything else I need to know before using Butenafine?
- Apply Butenafine to the affected area and the immediate surrounding skin once or twice a day for 2-4 weeks as directed by your doctor
- This medicine must strictly be used for external application – on skin surfaces only. Do not use Butenafine in the mouth, nose, near the eyes, on the nails, scalp, any lining of organs or the vagina
- Do not apply any bandages or dressings without the knowledge of the doctor
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using the medicine. Clean the affected area with water and apply the cream only after thoroughly drying the skin surface
- Do not stop using the medicine earlier than as prescribed by the doctor. Take doctor’s advice if you feel no improvement after using for four weeks
- If any allergic reactions or irritation occurs, stop using Butenafine
- This medicine is not for use in children less than 12 years old
Q: Is Butenafine an effective medicine for fungal infections?
- Butenafine should not be applied to all fungal infections. It has to be administered under doctor’s supervision for fungal infections of the skin such as athlete’s foot, Jock’s itch, ringworm, etc.
- It is an effective medicine and produces quick results (within two weeks) as compared to other similar medicines and also prevents re-occurrences
- Lesser side effects, daily once application and prolonged activity after stopping (re-infection seen in very few cases) makes Butenafine a useful medication for prescribed fungal skin infections
