Molecule Description
Balsalazide is a form of another medicine called mesalamine. It is available in inactive form and can be activated by the colonic bacteria into its medicine form.
Uses
Swelling of colon (Inflammation)
Long-standing sores and swelling in intestine (Ulcerative colitis)
Contraindications
When should one not use Balsalazide
- Liver disorder
- Kidney diseases
- Any allergic reaction with Salicylate medicines or anti-inflammatory medicines
- And in those who have suffered from allergic reactions earlier with Aspirin or any other pain reliever medicines

This medicine works by reducing the production of selective chemicals (prostaglandins) that cause swelling in the intestines.

Interactions with other medicines
- It is advised to avoid the intake of Balsalazide along with Salicylate medicines like Aspirin, NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, etc.
- Drugs for diabetes (e.g., Repaglinide), Sulfonylureas (e.g., Glipizide), convulsions like Valproic Acid are contraindicated because Balsalazide may increase the risk of the medicine's side effects
- Drugs for increased blood pressure like Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors like Enalapril, for gouty arthritis like Probenecid or Sulfinpyrazone, should not be taken along with Balsalazide because Balsalazide can decrease their therapeutic activity
