Medical Description

Betadine gargle is an antiseptic liquid used to wash the throat. Betadine gargle helps relieve sore throat and other oral infections. It contains a povidone-iodine solution. Povidine-iodine kills a wide range of germs or microorganisms present in your mouth and throat. It may also be used after dental procedures to prevent infections. Betadine gargle is meant for oral use only and must not be swallowed. Betadine gargle should not be used for children below 12 years of age without taking advice from a doctor. Use Betadine gargle with the dosing cup provided along with the package. Avoid contact with this gargle with eyes and silver jewellery.

Uses

Betadine Gargle is used to treat acute infections of the lining of the mouth and throat, such as inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and mouth ulcers. It is also used for cleansing the mouth (oral hygiene) before, during, and after dental and mouth surgery.

Contraindications

  • If you have a thyroid disorder, including an overactive or underactive thyroid, or nodular goitre, unless your doctor has advised it. Iodine is absorbed through the mouth lining and can disturb thyroid function.
  • If you are due to have a thyroid scan or radioactive iodine treatment, as absorbed iodine interferes with both.
  • If you are allergic to iodine or to povidone-iodine.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has advised it, absorbed iodine reaches the baby and can affect the baby’s thyroid.
  • In young children, unless a doctor has advised it.
  • If you have kidney failure, unless your doctor has advised it.

Side effects

Although rare some people may experience allergic reaction after using this gargle. Symptoms of an allergic reaction includes rash, itching or breathing issue.

Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You don't feel any improvement within seven days.
  • If you feel irritation, pain, or redness persists or worsens, contact your doctor immediately.
  • You have burns and are already using povidone-iodine as a topical antiseptic.
  • You develop fever, rash or swelling of the throat.
  • Do not let it into your eyes, if contact occurs then rinse it thoroughly.
  • During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the use of Betadine (povidone-iodine preparations) should be avoided unless directed by a doctor, and its use should be limited.

Directions for Use

Mix Betadine gargle with an equal amount of warm water and gargle or rinse your mouth with up to 10 ml of solution for a maximum of 30 seconds, making sure not to swallow it. You can repeat this process up to four times a day, for up to 14 days in a row, or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage and disposal

  • Store it at 25⁰C in a cool and dry place away from light and moisture.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Discard any unused medicine properly.
  • Avoid contact with jewellery.
  • It may stain clothing or dental work.

Quick Tips

  • Use it for short courses only. Prolonged regular use increases iodine absorption and the risk of thyroid upset.
  • Use it as directed on the pack, and do not make it stronger in hopes of a better effect.
  • Gargle, then spit it out completely. Do not swallow.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any thyroid condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are due a thyroid scan.
  • See a doctor if the sore throat lasts more than a few days or comes with a high fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, drooling, or a swollen neck.
  • A gargle soothes and reduces organisms in the mouth and throat. It does not treat bacterial throat infections that need antibiotics.
  • It can stain fabric and some dental work. Rinse splashes promptly.

Dosage

Overdose

If you have used it in excess or swallowed it accidentally and experience any unusual symptoms, then contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you have skipped gargling with this, then use it as soon as you recall it. But do not use it in excess in order to compensate for the missed dose.

How does this medicine work?

Betadine gargle contains povidone iodine as its active ingredient. Povidone Iodine is an antiseptic. It kills microbes and bacteria by disrupting their vital functions within the cells.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Lithium: regular use of an iodine-containing product alongside lithium increases the chance of an underactive thyroid. Tell your doctor.
  • Thyroid medicines, including carbimazole and levothyroxine: absorbed iodine can alter thyroid control, so tell your doctor if you use this gargle regularly.
  • Hydrogen peroxide and other antiseptic mouthwashes: do not use them at the same time, as they inactivate each other.
  • Any medicine applied in the mouth: leave a gap between uses rather than using them together.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interactions.

Interactions with food items

  • Do not eat or drink immediately after gargling. Let it act on the throat lining first.
  • Do not swallow it. It is a gargle, not a drink, and swallowing increases iodine absorption.
  • Milk and food do not interact with it, but they wash it away, so gargle between meals rather than straight after one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Check with your doctor first. Betadine gargle contains iodine that can be absorbed through the lining of the mouth and may disturb thyroid function, which matters if you have an overactive or underactive thyroid or a goitre. Occasional short-term use is different from gargling regularly for weeks.
Short courses only, as directed. The longer and more regularly Betadine gargle is used, the more iodine is absorbed. If a sore throat has not settled within a few days, see a doctor rather than continuing.

It reduces organisms in the mouth and throat and eases discomfort, but Betadine gargle does not replace antibiotics when a bacterial infection needs them. See a doctor for a high fever, severe or one-sided pain, difficulty swallowing or breathing, drooling, or a swollen neck.
Not at the same time. Hydrogen peroxide and some antiseptic mouthwashes inactivate povidone-iodine, so they cancel each other out. Leave a gap, or use one or the other.
Betadine gargle can stain fabric and may temporarily discolour the tongue or affect some dental work. Rinse splashes off fabric promptly, and spit it out fully. Tell your dentist if you have crowns or dentures.
