Medical Description

Tresivac PFS vaccine is a live, attenuated vaccine that provides active protection against three common diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. It stimulates the immune system to defend against microorganisms, helping to prevent infections in people of all age groups.

This vaccine must be administered by a healthcare professional. It is administered in three doses during childhood. The first dose is given at 9 months of age, followed by the second dose at any time between 15 and 18 months. The third and final dose is administered between 4 and 6 years of age to ensure long-term protection.

Potential side effects may include redness, pain, and swelling at the injection site. Other possible reactions include loss of appetite, drowsiness, irritability, and fever, although these symptoms are usually temporary and resolve on their own. If these side effects persist or become bothersome, consult your doctor for guidance on managing them.

Before receiving the vaccine, inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney issues. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before vaccination.

Uses

Tresivac PFS vaccine is used for:
  • Active vaccination of children from 9 months to 10 years of age against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella simultaneously.
  • Immunisation of children above 10 years and susceptible non-pregnant adult individuals.
  • Two doses of Tresivac PFS vaccine for every child: The first dose at 9 months and the second dose between 15 and 18 months. The second dose can be given any time, 4 to 8 weeks after the first dose.
  • Adults who missed childhood vaccinations or have no vaccination records can also receive two doses of Tresivac PFS, with a minimum interval of four weeks between doses. However, adults may experience more side effects.

Contraindications

Do not receive Tresivac PFS vaccine if you or your child have/are:
  • Receiving corticosteroids, other immunosuppressing drugs, or undergoing radiotherapy may reduce the vaccine's effectiveness.
  • In a febrile (feverish) state.
  • Suffering from acute infectious diseases.
  • Diagnosed with leukaemia, severe anaemia, or other severe diseases of the blood system.
  • Experiencing severe kidney impairment.
  • Having decompensated heart disease.
  • Recently (within 6 weeks, or ideally 3 months), received gamma-globulin, blood transfusions, or other blood products containing immunoglobulins.
  • Having a potential allergy to any vaccine components, including traces of neomycin.
  • A history of anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions (severe allergic reactions) to neomycin or eggs (hypersensitivity to eggs).
  • A history of hypersensitivity reactions to cow's milk.
  • Pregnant or planning to conceive within 28 days of vaccination.
Minor illnesses, such as low-grade fever, mild respiratory infections, or diarrhoea, are generally not reasons to avoid vaccination. Immunising children with malnutrition is particularly important.

Side effects

Like all vaccines, Tresivac PFS vaccine can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them.
  • Runny nose and sore throat (Nasopharyngitis)
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Injection site pain
  • Injection site swelling
  • Injection site redness (erythema)
  • Rash
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Fever (Pyrexia)

Dosage

Missed a Dose

If a dose is missed, please consult your healthcare professional for guidance. They will advise on the appropriate next steps to ensure optimal protection.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Tresivac PFS vaccine works by introducing weakened forms of the measles, mumps, and rubella viruses into your body. These weakened viruses are not strong enough to cause the diseases, but they stimulate your immune system to produce antibodies (special proteins that fight off infections). This process builds active immunity, meaning your body learns to recognise and fight off the actual measles, mumps, and rubella viruses if you are exposed to them in the future.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Immunoglobulins/Blood Products: Tresivac PFS vaccine should not be given within 6 weeks (and ideally within 3 months) after receiving immunoglobulins or blood products containing immunoglobulins (like blood or plasma). Similarly, immunoglobulins should not be given within two weeks after vaccination with Tresivac PFS vaccine. This is because immunoglobulins can inactivate the vaccine.
  • Tuberculin Test: Individuals who are tuberculin-positive may temporarily become tuberculin-negative after vaccination.
  • Other Vaccines: Tresivac PFS vaccine can be given at the same time as DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis), DT (Diphtheria, Tetanus), TT (Tetanus Toxoid), Td (Tetanus, reduced Diphtheria), BCG, Polio vaccine (oral and inactivated), Haemophilus influenzae type b, Hepatitis B, Yellow fever vaccine, and Vitamin A supplementation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Tresivac PFS vaccine is used for active vaccination against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella infections, primarily in children from 9 months to 10 years of age, and also in older children and susceptible non-pregnant adults.

For children, two doses are recommended: the first at 9 months and the second between 15-18 months (or 4-8 weeks after the first dose). For adults, two doses are given with a minimum interval of 4 weeks.

No, Tresivac PFS vaccine should not be administered to pregnant women. If pregnancy is planned, a one-month interval should be observed after vaccination.

Common side effects include fever, pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site, rash, runny nose, and conjunctivitis. Joint pain and arthritis can be common in adolescent and adult females due to the rubella component.

Low-grade fever, mild respiratory infections, or diarrhoea are generally not contraindications. However, if your child has a severe fever or an illness, vaccination should be postponed. Always consult your doctor for advice.
