Medical Description

Stazee tablet is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the throat, tonsils, sinuses, ears, skin, soft tissues and lungs. It contains azithromycin, which stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for growth and multiplication. This helps the body's natural defences clear the infection. Stazee tablet is swallowed whole by mouth with water, with or without food, and should be used only for a bacterial infection diagnosed or suspected by a healthcare professional.

Uses

  • Chest infections: Treats certain bacterial lung infections, including community-acquired pneumonia and bacterial flare-ups of long-term bronchitis, when susceptible bacteria are involved.
  • Throat and sinus infections: Reduces soreness, swelling and thick nasal discharge caused by selected bacterial infections in the throat, tonsils or sinuses.
  • Ear infections: Treats selected bacterial ear infections when a healthcare professional confirms that azithromycin is appropriate.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: Helps control susceptible bacterial infections affecting the skin or tissues beneath it, including infected wounds.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, azithromycin or another macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, do not take it. Do not use it if you previously developed cholestatic jaundice or liver dysfunction after azithromycin. Tell your doctor if you have an irregular heartbeat, low potassium or magnesium, severe kidney disease, liver disease or a previous severe allergic reaction.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Azithromycin can upset the stomach and cause a sick feeling after the tablet is taken; seek advice if it prevents you keeping fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in normal bowel bacteria can cause loose stools during or after treatment; contact a doctor promptly for severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation may cause vomiting; get medical advice if it is repeated, contains blood or leaves you unable to keep fluids down.
  • Indigestion: Irritation in the upper stomach may cause burning, fullness or discomfort; tell your doctor if it is severe or persistent.

Storage and disposal

Store Stazee tablet in its original pack in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of children's reach. Do not use tablets after the expiry date. Return unused medicine to a pharmacist for safe disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Use Stazee only for a bacterial infection diagnosed by a healthcare professional.
  • Do not use it for a cold, flu or another viral illness.
  • Report fainting, a fast or irregular heartbeat, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe diarrhoea.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or a heart rhythm problem.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor changes the plan.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or other unwanted effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Azithromycin attaches to the protein-making machinery inside bacterial cells and stops them producing proteins needed to grow and multiply. The weakened bacteria can then be cleared by the body's natural defences. This action does not treat viral illnesses such as most colds or flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Stazee works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them about antacids containing aluminium or magnesium, which can lower azithromycin absorption when taken at the same time; warfarin and other blood thinners, which may increase bleeding; digoxin, which may reach higher blood levels; and medicines for irregular heartbeats, malaria or other infections, which may increase heart rhythm problems.

Interactions with food items

Stazee tablet may be taken with or without food. No specific food interaction is known.
