Medical Description

Sparvik tablet is an antibiotic used for selected bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, urinary tract, female genital tract, skin and soft tissues in adults and children. It contains sparfloxacin, which blocks a bacterial enzyme needed for copying and repairing genetic material, so susceptible bacteria stop growing and die. The tablet is swallowed whole with sufficient water and may be used with or without food, exactly as prescribed. It is intended for bacterial infections and will not treat viral illnesses such as a common cold.

  • Urinary tract infections: Sparvik tablet treats selected bacterial infections of the urinary system and supports recovery from urinary symptoms.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: It helps clear susceptible bacterial infections affecting the skin or tissues beneath it.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Sparvik tablet during pregnancy unless a specialist decides that no suitable alternative is available. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Sparvik tablet is generally avoided during breastfeeding because it may cause toxicity in a nursing infant. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding; report diarrhoea or rash in the baby if exposure occurs.

Driving

Driving

Sparvik tablet can cause dizziness, which may make driving or operating machinery unsafe. Do not drive until you know how it affects you and feel fully alert.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol safety with Sparvik tablet is not established. Ask your doctor before drinking, especially if you feel dizzy, nauseated or aware of palpitations.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. It may be taken with or without food. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet. Keep aluminium- or magnesium-containing antacids, milk, yoghurt and mineral supplements containing calcium or iron separate from Sparvik tablet as advised, because they can reduce absorption. Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Storage and disposal

Store Sparvik tablet in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use expired tablets, and dispose of unused medicine through a pharmacist.

Quick Tips

  • Use Sparvik tablet only for a bacterial infection diagnosed by a doctor.
  • Keep antacids and calcium- or iron-containing supplements separate as advised.
  • Stop strenuous activity and contact your doctor promptly if tendon pain or swelling develops.
  • Get emergency medical help for fainting, a fast or irregular heartbeat, breathing difficulty or facial swelling.
  • Do not stop the prescribed course early unless your doctor tells you to.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Sparvik tablet may cause severe nausea, dizziness, confusion, seizures or an abnormal heartbeat. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient sparfloxacin blocks a bacterial enzyme needed for copying and repairing genetic material. Without these processes, susceptible bacteria cannot multiply normally and eventually die.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Sparvik tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, apomorphine, aripiprazole, sunitinib and thioridazine can increase the risk of serious heart-rhythm changes; antacids containing aluminium or magnesium and mineral supplements containing calcium or iron can reduce sparfloxacin absorption; blood thinners can have altered effects; steroid medicines can increase tendon injury risk; and diabetes medicines can cause blood sugar changes.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is established for Sparvik tablet. Milk, yoghurt and mineral-fortified drinks may reduce absorption when taken close to the tablet.
