Medical Description

Reliseal Kit is a combination medicine used in hospitals to help control bleeding during suitable surgical procedures. It contains aprotinin, fibrinogen and thrombin. Fibrinogen and thrombin form a clot at the treated site, while aprotinin helps limit breakdown of the developing clot. The kit is prepared and used by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic when local clot formation is appropriate. It must not be self-administered or used at home.

Uses

  • Surgical bleeding control: The combination helps form and preserve a clot at a surgical bleeding site to reduce blood loss.
  • Wound healing support: Local clot formation may help seal treated tissue and support the early healing process after surgery.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. A previous severe reaction to aprotinin or other blood proteins requires specialist review. The surgical team should also assess kidney problems and conditions that increase the risk of unwanted clotting.

Side effects

  • Allergic reaction: Aprotinin, fibrinogen or thrombin can trigger rash, wheezing, facial swelling or a sudden blood pressure drop. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat needs emergency medical help.
  • Fever: A raised temperature can occur around surgery or treatment. Tell the clinical team if it is severe or does not settle.
  • Headache or fast heartbeat: These symptoms may occur during recovery. Report severe headache, chest pain, faintness or breathlessness immediately.
  • Blood or kidney changes: Anaemia, low blood platelets or kidney problems may develop after treatment. Tell the clinical team about unusual weakness, bruising or reduced urine.
  • Breathing or stomach symptoms: Pleuritis, inflammation around the lungs, asthma, pneumonia, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or constipation may occur. Report breathing trouble or repeated vomiting promptly.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Fibrinogen becomes a mesh that forms the basis of a clot, and thrombin starts this clot-forming step at the treated site. Aprotinin slows the breakdown of clot-forming proteins, helping the clot remain in place long enough to control bleeding.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Reliseal Kit works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention blood thinners, medicines that prevent clotting, medicines that dissolve clots, aprotinin-containing products and treatments affecting kidney function.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interactions are known. Follow the hospital team's instructions before and after surgery.
