Medical Description

Peptilcer capsule is used for acid reflux and duodenal ulcers, and may also protect against acid-related problems in people using certain painkillers. It contains pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that lowers the amount of acid released by the stomach. This relieves acid flowing back into the food pipe and gives a duodenal ulcer, a sore in the upper small intestine, a better chance to heal. Peptilcer capsule is taken by mouth, swallowed whole with water on an empty stomach as advised, and is not opened or chewed.

Uses

  • Acid reflux: Stomach acid moving upwards can cause burning behind the breastbone and a sour taste; Peptilcer capsule reduces this irritation for easier digestion.
  • Duodenal ulcer: This sore in the upper small intestine can hurt when exposed to acid; Peptilcer capsule reduces that irritation and supports tissue repair.
  • Painkiller-related ulcer prevention: For people who need certain painkillers, pantoprazole may help reduce acid-related stomach problems when prescribed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before use if you have severe liver disease, unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood or black stools. These warning signs may need assessment before acid treatment is started.

Side effects

  • Headache: Changes in stomach acid control can be followed by head pain in some people. Seek advice if it is severe, sudden or persistent.
  • Diarrhoea: Lower stomach acid can alter gut organisms and lead to loose stools. Get medical care for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Pantoprazole may upset digestion and cause queasiness or vomiting. Contact your doctor if vomiting prevents you keeping fluids down.
  • Abdominal pain and flatulence: Changes in digestion can cause cramps, bloating or extra gas. Seek urgent care if pain is severe or with black stools.
  • Dizziness or joint pain: Some people may feel light-headed or develop aching joints during treatment. Avoid driving if dizzy and ask your doctor if pain is troublesome.

  • Tell your doctor if you need methotrexate or erlotinib.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. Overdose may cause headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal discomfort or confusion.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor, meaning it reduces the final release of acid from the stomach's acid-producing cells. With less acid, irritation from reflux eases and ulcers have a better environment to heal.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Peptilcer capsule works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, methotrexate may remain in the body longer and cause more unwanted effects, especially during intensive treatment. Erlotinib and other medicines that need stomach acid may be absorbed less well when stomach acid is reduced.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Foods or drinks that trigger reflux may worsen symptoms.
