Medical Description

Pentab-40 tablet is an acid-reducing medicine. It is used to treat acid-related diseases of the stomach and intestine like ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Pentab-40 tablet contains pantoprazole as the active substance. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Take this medicine in the exact dose and duration as recommended by your doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine on your own. Pentab-40 tablet should be taken preferably in the morning before meals. It is important that you make certain lifestyle modifications like eating smaller meals, eating slowly, avoiding overeating and lying down immediately after having a meal, limiting alcohol intake, and avoiding smoking. You should also exercise regularly while taking Pantakind tablets for adequate control of your acid-related disorder. This medicine should only be used in adults and adolescents of 12 years of age or above.

Uses

  • Pentab-40 tablet is used for the treatment of symptoms like heartburn, acid regurgitation (sensation of acid in your throat or mouth), pain while swallowing that is caused due to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
  • Treatment of reflux oesophagitis (inflammation of oesophagus with regurgitation of acid in the stomach).
  • In adults, it is used to prevent small intestine and stomach ulcers that are caused by long term use of painkillers called NSAIDs e.g., Ibuprofen.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to pantoprazole, any other proton pump inhibitors, or any other ingredient of Pentab-40 tablet.
  • If you are on a medicine called rilpivirine. If you are not sure what this medicine is, please confirm with your doctor.

Missed a Dose

How Does It Work?

A pump called the proton pump in the stomach is responsible for the secretion of stomach acids. Pentab-40 tablet binds to this proton pump in stomach cells, thus blocking acid secretion. Therefore, it is used in conditions where there is excessive acidity.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way Pentab-40 tablet works, or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Inform the doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid possible interaction.
  • Particular care should be taken if you are taking medicines that are gastric pH dependent such as itraconazole, ketoconazole (used to treat fungal infections), medicines used to treat HIV/AIDS such as atazanavir, tenofovir, medicines used for thinning of blood like warfarin, phenylcoumarin, and medicines used for treating certain types of cancer such as methotrexate.

You should avoid using these for a long duration.

Take Pentab-40 tablet only for the duration as prescribed by your doctor.If there is relief in your symptoms, you may visit your doctor for a follow-up, where your doctor may reduce its dose.This medicine is known to cause fractures, low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 levels on long term use.You need to be cautious about these and keep checking your blood levels regularly, and if needed, your doctor may prescribe the supplements for these deficiencies.
