Medical Description

Pedimox tablet is an antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections and may be included in combination treatment for Helicobacter pylori linked with peptic ulcers. It contains amoxicillin, a penicillin-type medicine that stops bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive. This can help clear infections affecting the lungs, blood, brain, bones, joints, urinary tract, stomach, intestines, teeth, gums, leg ulcers or pressure sores when the bacteria are susceptible. Pedimox tablet is taken by mouth as a whole tablet with water, with or without food as advised.

Uses

  • Respiratory and invasive bacterial infections: Infections in the lungs, blood, brain, bones or joints can cause serious illness; amoxicillin helps clear susceptible bacteria when selected by a doctor.
  • Urinary, stomach and intestinal infections: This medicine targets susceptible bacteria causing infection in these areas and supports recovery under medical supervision.
  • Dental and gum infections: Bacterial gum ulcers, tooth infections and dental abscesses can cause pain or swelling; amoxicillin helps control susceptible bacteria.
  • Infected leg ulcers and pressure sores: Bacteria can delay healing in damaged skin; this medicine helps treat a confirmed susceptible infection.
  • Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcers: Amoxicillin may be used with other prescribed medicines to help remove this stomach bacterium.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, amoxicillin, penicillin or a related cephalosporin medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, glandular fever or a previous serious reaction to an antibiotic. This medicine does not treat viral illnesses such as colds.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Amoxicillin can disturb helpful bowel bacteria and cause loose stools during treatment. Seek medical help for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Nausea: Amoxicillin may upset the stomach and cause queasiness, especially early in treatment. Tell your doctor if it prevents eating or drinking.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Amoxicillin is generally considered suitable during pregnancy, but use Pedimox tablet only after your doctor has assessed that treatment is needed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Small amounts of amoxicillin may pass into breast milk and are usually not expected to harm the infant. Tell your doctor if the baby develops diarrhoea, thrush or a rash.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if dizziness, convulsions or another reaction affects your alertness, vision or movement. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Information about alcohol with Pedimox tablet is limited. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before drinking alcohol during treatment.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole, and do not chew, crush or break it. Use Pedimox tablet for the duration prescribed, even if you feel better.

Storage and disposal

Store Pedimox tablet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of children's reach. Do not use expired tablets, and ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Use Pedimox tablet only when a doctor has selected it for a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection.
  • Complete the prescribed treatment even if you start to feel better, unless your doctor changes it.
  • Tell your doctor about any previous reaction to penicillin or cephalosporin medicines.
  • Drink fluids if diarrhoea occurs, and seek help for severe or bloody stools.
  • Do not share or save leftover antibiotics.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Amoxicillin stops bacteria from building the protective cell wall around their cells. Without this wall, susceptible bacteria break down and die, allowing the infection to clear.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Pedimox works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor about warfarin, acenocoumarol and phenindione, because amoxicillin may increase their blood-thinning effect and bleeding risk; and about the purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine and inactivated cholera vaccine, because vaccine timing or response may need review.
