Medical Description

Parasafe suspension is a paracetamol medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever in children. It contains paracetamol, also called acetaminophen, which lowers the body's production of substances involved in pain and raised temperature. This can ease teething pain, earache, minor injury discomfort and cold-related aches, but it does not treat the cause of an infection. Parasafe suspension is given by mouth after shaking, using the measuring device supplied with the pack and only as advised for the child.

Uses

  • Pain in children: Teething, earache and minor injuries can cause mild to moderate discomfort; this suspension helps relieve the pain.
  • Fever: A raised temperature can make a child uncomfortable; paracetamol helps lower it while the cause is assessed.
  • Cold-related discomfort: Body aches and fever during a cold may be eased by this medicine when a clinician advises its use.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not give Parasafe suspension to a child with severe liver disease unless a doctor specifically advises it. Do not use it alongside any other paracetamol-containing product.

Side effects

  • Stomach upset: Paracetamol may cause nausea, abdominal discomfort or vomiting in some children. Seek medical advice if vomiting prevents the child from keeping fluids down.
  • Allergic reaction: Rash, itching or swelling can indicate sensitivity to an ingredient. Get emergency medical help if breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat occurs.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much paracetamol can cause serious liver injury even if the child initially seems well. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Paracetamol reduces the production of chemical messengers involved in pain and raised temperature. This eases discomfort and helps bring a high body temperature down, but it does not treat the infection or illness causing the fever.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Parasafe suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements the child takes. In particular, do not combine it with another paracetamol-containing product, and tell the doctor about medicines that may affect the liver.
