Medical Description

MDD XR is a prescription medication. It is used in the management of depression. The active component of MDD XR is Desvenlafaxine (25 mg). Depression is characterized by low mood, low motivation, hopelessness, inability to feel pleasure, and loss of interest in daily activities. Many neurotransmitters play a role in this, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. These are chemical substances in the brain that help relay messages to various parts of the body. The medication should be taken as recommended by the doctor. It should not be stopped abruptly, as it may cause withdrawal effects. Take the tablet at the same time every day for maximum efficacy.

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or known allergies to any components in this medication
  • Desvenlafaxine should not be used to treat children and adolescents (persons less than 18 years of age)
  • It is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma (a condition with increased pressure in the eyes)
  • Use cautiously in patients with heart issues, liver dysfunction, and kidney disease

This medication can cause side effects such as drowsiness, sleepiness, fatigue, dizziness, etc. Hence, driving and the use of heavy machinery are not recommended.

The use of alcohol and CNS depressants with MDD XR is not recommended, as it may cause worsening side effects and may even result in coma and death.

  • You should inform your doctor about any other medications. This tablet interacts with many other medications that use the same metabolic enzymes
  • You should report to your doctor immediately in case of any mood changes or suicidal ideation
  • In case of worsening your symptoms such as persistent low mood, increased anxieties, worsening obsessive behavior, suicidal ideation, consult your doctor immediately.

Directions for Use

  • This medication should be taken as prescribed by the treating physician
  • It is recommended to take this medication on a regular schedule, i.e., at the same time every day, to see maximum benefits of this medication
  • Swallow this medication as a whole. Do not crush, chew or break this tablet
  • It is recommended to finish the entire course of this medication as prescribed by your treating doctor
  • It can take 2 to 4 weeks for the maximum efficacy of this medicine to manifest
  • Abrupt stoppage of the drug can cause withdrawal side effects. Consult your doctor before stopping this medication

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool and dry place away from direct light and moisture. Do not use the medicine after the date of expiration. Keep the tablets away from children and pets. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. Dispose of it with biomedical waste only.

The symptoms of overdose may include excessive sleepiness, convulsions, vomiting, vertigo (dizziness), fall in blood pressure, increased heart rate, abnormal heart rhythms, or even coma. In case of a suspected overdose, take the patient to an emergency care center for management.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of this tablet, it is advised to take it as soon as possible. If the duration missed is too long, and it is almost time for the next dose, it is recommended to skip the missed dose and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double the dose of the tablet.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Desvenlafaxine is a Serotonin Norepinephrine Re-uptake Inhibitor belonging to the antidepressants class of medication. It primarily acts by regulating the levels of the chemical messenger's Serotonin and Norepinephrine. It increases the level of these chemicals in specific areas of the brain. This helps in improving mood and in resolving other symptoms of depression.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • This drug should not be used concomitantly or within 2 weeks with antidepressants like Selegiline, Rasagiline, etc., as it may cause serotonin syndrome which is potentially life-threatening
  • The use of this medicine with thioridazine, pimozide, linezolid, or methylene blue, is also contraindicated
  • Patients who are taking other medications, which increase the levels of serotonin should receive education regarding the risks
  • It should not be mixed with medications that cause the arrest of bleeding, such as aspirin, NSAIDs, heparin, warfarin, and other anti-coagulants or other medicines that cause decreased platelet activity as it may lead to bruising, nose bleeds, or internal bleeding
  • This medication can decrease the seizure threshold and should not be used with other such medicines

MDD XR can take 2-4 weeks for results to show. Continue taking the tablet as advised and visit your doctor for follow-ups as advised. Do not alter the dose or stop the tablet.

This medication should be used for the duration as advised by your doctor. Anti-depressants are usually required for 6-9 months to completely resolve symptoms and decrease recurrence chances. Talk to your doctor for more information. Abrupt stoppage can result in withdrawal side effects.

Insomnia is a common side effect of MDD XR tablets. Consult your doctor to understand how to manage side effects. Do not suddenly stop the tablet.
