Medical Description

Mannitol IP (baxter) injection is used in hospital care to rapidly lower pressure inside the eye, reduce swelling in the brain and support urine production in selected cases of acute kidney failure. Its active ingredient is mannitol, an osmotic medicine that shifts water from swollen tissues into the bloodstream and then into the urine. This water shift can lower pressure in the eye and around the brain while increasing urine flow when the kidneys can respond. The solution is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic with close monitoring.

Uses

  • Acute glaucoma: The mannitol infusion rapidly lowers pressure inside the eye, which can relieve pain and help protect vision during a severe episode.
  • Brain swelling: It draws excess water away from swollen brain tissue, reducing pressure and the risk of complications from serious brain conditions or injury.
  • Acute kidney failure: In selected patients who still produce urine, it increases urine flow and may help remove excess fluid and waste.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. It may be unsuitable if you cannot produce urine, have severe dehydration, uncontrolled heart failure, fluid in the lungs, serious worsening kidney function, or bleeding inside the brain that is not related to surgery. The medical team will assess your heart, lungs, kidneys and fluid balance before treatment.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Rapid movement of body water can upset the stomach during or after the infusion. Tell the medical team if it is severe or does not settle.
  • Vomiting: Fluid shifts may trigger vomiting and worsen dehydration. Report it promptly so the team can check your fluid and blood salt balance.
  • Headache: Changes in pressure or body fluids can cause head pain. Tell the medical team immediately if it is severe or unlike your usual headache.
  • Dehydration: Increased urine flow can remove too much water, causing thirst, dry mouth, dizziness or weakness. Report severe thirst or worsening dizziness at once.
  • Injection site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling can develop around the vein. Tell the nurse immediately if swelling spreads, the skin blisters or the area becomes increasingly painful.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Safety in pregnancy has not been established, so the medical team will use Mannitol injection only when the expected benefit justifies possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Information about mannitol passing into breast milk is limited, so the medical team will decide whether treatment is appropriate.

Driving

Driving

Mannitol injection is given in hospital, but dizziness, weakness or fluid changes may affect you after treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until the medical team says it is safe.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol safety is not established during Mannitol injection treatment. Ask your doctor before drinking alcohol, especially if you feel dizzy or dehydrated.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is given into a vein, and the medical team decides how it is infused. Kidney function, urine production, blood salts, fluid balance and heart or lung status may be monitored during treatment.

Storage and disposal

Mannitol injection is stored by the hospital according to its handling instructions. The container should not be used if it is damaged, cloudy or discoloured. Unused solution and supplies must be discarded by healthcare staff.

Quick Tips

  • Mannitol IP (baxter) injection is given only in a hospital or clinic.
  • Tell the medical team about kidney, heart or lung disease before treatment.
  • Report breathlessness, chest discomfort, severe headache, confusion or a major change in urine promptly.
  • Stay available for blood and urine checks advised by the hospital team.
  • Tell the team about every medicine, vitamin and supplement you use.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much mannitol may cause severe dehydration, fluid overload, worsening heart or lung congestion, confusion or dangerous changes in blood salts. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

In the bloodstream, mannitol raises the concentration of dissolved particles, which draws water out of swollen tissues. The kidneys filter mannitol into urine, increasing urine production and helping remove excess fluid. The same water shift lowers pressure inside the eye and around the brain.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Mannitol injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention tobramycin and other medicines that can affect the kidneys, ciclosporin, atracurium and other muscle-relaxing medicines, water tablets, and medicines that change fluid or blood salt balance. These combinations may increase strain on the kidneys, alter fluid balance or change the effect of muscle relaxation.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Alcohol safety has not been established during treatment, so ask the medical team before drinking alcohol.
