Medical Description

Levodaks tablet is an antibiotic used to treat selected bacterial infections of the lungs, sinuses, ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It contains levofloxacin, which stops bacteria from copying their genetic material and multiplying. This helps clear infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to the medicine, but it does not work against viral colds or flu. Levodaks tablet is swallowed whole with sufficient water and may be taken with or without food, as prescribed. It should be used only after a clinician has assessed that a bacterial infection is likely.

  • Ear, nose and throat infections: It may treat susceptible bacterial infections affecting the ears, nose, throat or tonsils.
  • Female genital infections: Levofloxacin may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections affecting the female reproductive organs when a clinician considers it appropriate.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Levofloxacin blocks bacterial enzymes needed for copying genetic material, repairing cells and multiplying. Without these functions, the bacteria cannot grow and many of them die. The medicine acts on bacteria and does not treat viral colds or flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Levodaks tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention antacids and mineral supplements because they can lower levofloxacin absorption, warfarin and other blood thinners because bleeding may increase, diabetes medicines because glucose control may change, theophylline because its effects may increase, heart rhythm medicines such as amiodarone, sotalol, domperidone or artemether because irregular heartbeats may become more likely, steroid medicines because tendon injury risk may increase, and medicines for seizures.

Interactions with food items

Milk, yoghurt, calcium-rich foods, iron-rich foods and mineral supplements may reduce levofloxacin absorption when used too close to the tablet. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them.
