Medical Description

Gastrogyl syrup is a combination antibiotic used for selected bacterial and parasitic infections of the digestive system when prescribed after medical assessment. It contains ciprofloxacin, which acts against susceptible bacteria, and tinidazole, which acts against selected bacteria and parasites. Ciprofloxacin prevents susceptible bacteria from multiplying, while tinidazole damages the genetic material of certain infectious organisms. Gastrogyl syrup is used by mouth as a liquid, so shake the bottle and measure each use with the supplied device. The combination is not suitable for every cause of diarrhoea.

Uses

  • Bacterial intestinal infection: Ciprofloxacin may treat susceptible bacteria in the digestive tract when a clinician confirms that an antibacterial medicine is appropriate.
  • Parasitic intestinal infection: Tinidazole acts against selected intestinal parasites and low-oxygen bacteria that can cause diarrhoea or abdominal symptoms.
  • Mixed infectious diarrhoea: When susceptible bacteria and parasites are suspected together, the combination may be prescribed after medical assessment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, ciprofloxacin, tinidazole or related quinolone or nitroimidazole medicines, do not use it. Do not use Gastrogyl syrup without medical advice if you have had tendon problems after a quinolone medicine. Tell your doctor before use if you have heart rhythm problems, seizures, nerve disease, myasthenia gravis, or kidney or liver disease.

Side effects

  • Stomach pain: Ciprofloxacin or tinidazole can irritate the digestive tract and cause cramping. Seek prompt care if pain is severe, persistent or comes with a swollen abdomen.
  • Nausea: Tinidazole can irritate the stomach and create a sick feeling, particularly while the infection is active. Seek advice if it prevents drinking fluids.
  • Vomiting: Either ingredient may trigger vomiting. Get medical help if you cannot keep fluids down or develop dizziness, very little urine or marked weakness.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Seek prompt medical care for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Headache: Headache can occur during treatment and may be worsened by dehydration from diarrhoea. Seek advice for severe or unusual pain.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or could become pregnant. Gastrogyl syrup should be used during pregnancy only when the doctor considers it necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Tinidazole may require interruption of breastfeeding during treatment and for the period advised after the last dose, while ciprofloxacin also needs individual medical assessment.

Driving

Driving

Gastrogyl syrup may cause dizziness, weakness or reduced alertness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Do not drink wine, beer or spirits during treatment or for the period advised by your doctor after treatment, because tinidazole may react with alcohol.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack. Do not drink directly from the bottle. Use Gastrogyl syrup exactly as prescribed for the diagnosed infection. Avoid taking it with milk, yoghurt or calcium-fortified drinks because they may reduce ciprofloxacin absorption. Do not take antidiarrhoeal medicines on your own without medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store Gastrogyl syrup in its original container as directed on the pack, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use it after expiry or keep leftover syrup for a future illness. Ask a pharmacist how to discard unused medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Gastrogyl syrup well before use and measure it with the supplied device.
  • Keep it away from milk, yoghurt and calcium-fortified drinks around the time of use.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period advised after stopping it.
  • Stop the medicine and seek urgent advice for tendon pain or swelling.
  • Drink suitable fluids if diarrhoea occurs, unless your doctor has restricted fluids.
  • Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting or a seizure.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Gastrogyl syrup may cause dizziness, tremor, confusion, severe stomach discomfort, seizures or other serious effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Gastrogyl syrup is a combination of ciprofloxacin and tinidazole. Ciprofloxacin stops susceptible bacteria from copying their genetic material, so they cannot continue multiplying. Tinidazole damages the genetic material of certain bacteria and parasites, which stops their growth. The two ingredients therefore cover different infection-causing organisms.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Gastrogyl syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor about antacids and supplements containing iron, calcium or zinc, blood thinners, medicines that affect heart rhythm, medicines for seizures or diabetes, corticosteroids, and medicines used after organ transplantation. Antacids and these mineral supplements can lower ciprofloxacin absorption. Tinidazole and ciprofloxacin may change the effect of blood thinners, while corticosteroids can add to tendon risk.

Interactions with food items

Do not take Gastrogyl syrup with milk, yoghurt or calcium-fortified drinks because they may reduce ciprofloxacin absorption. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period advised by your doctor after the last dose because tinidazole can cause unpleasant reactions with alcohol.
