Medical Description

Florobid XL capsule is an antibiotic used in adults for certain bacterial infections of the lungs, ears, sinuses, nose, throat, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It contains levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria affected by it. Levofloxacin blocks bacterial enzymes needed to copy and repair genetic material, so the bacteria cannot grow normally and die. The capsule is taken by mouth as a whole with water, with or without food, only as prescribed for the infection. It does not treat viral colds or flu.

Uses

  • Bacterial lung infections: It treats selected bacterial infections in the lungs, including pneumonia, when a clinician considers levofloxacin appropriate.
  • Urinary tract infections: It treats certain bacterial infections affecting the bladder or other parts of the urinary system.
  • Ear, nose and throat infections: It may treat bacterial infections of the ears, sinuses, nose or throat when prescribed.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Bacterial infections in the skin or tissues underneath can cause redness, warmth and pain; this medicine helps clear susceptible infections.
  • Female genital infections: Certain bacterial infections of the female reproductive organs may improve when this medicine is selected after a clinician confirms the cause.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Florobid XL capsule after a severe allergic reaction to levofloxacin or another quinolone or fluoroquinolone. If a fluoroquinolone previously caused serious tendon problems for you, tell your doctor before treatment because this medicine may not be suitable.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Levofloxacin can upset the stomach soon after treatment begins. Take small sips of water and seek care if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in bowel bacteria can cause loose stools during or after treatment. Get prompt care for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Dizziness: This medicine can affect balance or alertness, especially after a capsule. Sit down safely and do not drive until you feel normal.
  • Rash or hives: Skin sensitivity can cause itchy red patches or raised welts. Stop using it and get emergency medical help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
  • Tendon pain: Levofloxacin can injure tendons, often near the ankle, during or after treatment. Stop strenuous activity and contact your doctor promptly.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Florobid XL capsule is generally avoided during pregnancy unless the doctor considers it necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Levofloxacin passes into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, because another medicine or a temporary pause in breastfeeding may be considered.

Driving

Driving

Florobid XL capsule may cause dizziness, sleepiness, visual changes or reduced alertness. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol may worsen dizziness and reduced alertness. Avoid it while taking Florobid XL capsule if you feel unwell.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Do not chew, crush or break the capsule. Florobid XL capsule may be taken with or without food. Milk, yoghurt, cheese and calcium-fortified drinks, as well as antacids or mineral supplements containing aluminium, magnesium, iron or zinc, can reduce absorption, so ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them. Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Storage and disposal

Store Florobid XL capsule in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not use capsules after the expiry date. Dispose of unused medicine according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Take Florobid XL capsule for the infection for which it was prescribed, not for a cold or flu.
  • Stop exercise and contact your doctor promptly for tendon pain, swelling or weakness.
  • Get urgent help for severe diarrhoea, especially if it contains blood or continues after treatment.
  • Stop the medicine and seek advice for numbness, burning or weakness in the arms or legs.
  • Do not drive if dizziness, sleepiness or vision changes occur.
  • Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause nausea, dizziness, confusion, tremor, abnormal heartbeats or seizures. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Levofloxacin blocks bacterial enzymes needed for copying and repairing bacterial genetic material. Without these processes, the bacteria cannot multiply normally and eventually die. This action does not treat viral illnesses such as most colds and flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Florobid XL works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention domperidone, amiodarone and other heart-rhythm medicines because they can increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms; artemether and other medicines that may affect heart rhythm; corticosteroids, seizure medicines, warfarin or other blood thinners, diabetes medicines, and antacids or mineral supplements. Corticosteroids can raise tendon injury risk, blood thinners can alter bleeding tests, diabetes medicines can change blood sugar, and antacids or minerals can reduce levofloxacin absorption.

Interactions with food items

Avoid taking Florobid XL capsule with dairy products or calcium-fortified drinks because they can reduce absorption. Caffeine may have stronger effects while taking levofloxacin, so limit excessive caffeine if you feel restless or have a fast heartbeat.
