Medical Description

Flacid syrup is a combination antacid and gas-relief medicine used for heartburn, acid indigestion, trapped gas and bloating. It contains magaldrate, which reduces excess stomach acid, and simethicone, which helps gas bubbles join and pass more easily. Together they can ease burning, sour-stomach discomfort and pressure caused by excess acid or trapped gas, but persistent symptoms need medical assessment. Flacid syrup is taken by mouth as a measured liquid, shaken well before use, and used only as advised.

Uses

  • Heartburn and acid indigestion: Burning behind the breastbone or a sour stomach can follow excess acid; this medicine eases these symptoms by reducing acid in the stomach.
  • Trapped gas and bloating: Pressure and fullness from gas can make the abdomen uncomfortable; this medicine helps disperse gas so it can leave the digestive tract more easily.
  • Acid-related stomach irritation: Discomfort caused by acid contacting the stomach lining may settle as the antacid makes stomach contents less acidic.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Ask your doctor before using Flacid syrup if you have kidney disease, have been told to restrict magnesium, aluminium, calcium or sodium, or have ongoing abdominal pain or vomiting. Persistent symptoms may need a different diagnosis.

Side effects

  • Constipation: Magaldrate can slow bowel movements and make stools harder; seek advice if constipation becomes severe or is accompanied by abdominal swelling.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in the antacid salts can loosen stools; replace lost fluids and contact your doctor if it persists.
  • Nausea: The liquid may cause queasiness or an unsettled stomach; stop and seek advice if vomiting or worsening pain develops.
  • Abdominal discomfort: Gas movement may briefly change bloating or cramping; obtain medical help for severe or persistent pain.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Magaldrate reacts with excess acid in the stomach and reduces its acidity. Simethicone lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestine, allowing them to join and pass more easily through belching or passing wind.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Flacid syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, magaldrate can reduce absorption of some oral medicines, including tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, thyroid medicines and iron products. Ask your pharmacist how to separate them.
