Medical Description

Fifolar syrup is an oral nutritional medicine used to help manage iron and folic acid deficiencies, including deficiency-related anaemia, and to provide nutritional support when advised. It contains a combination of carbonyl iron, cyanocobalamin, folic acid and tocopheryl, a form of vitamin E. Iron supplies material for haemoglobin, while folic acid and cyanocobalamin support the formation and normal maturation of red blood cells; tocopheryl is also present as part of the formulation. Fifolar syrup is taken by mouth after shaking, using the measuring device supplied with the pack, and is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet.

Uses

  • Iron deficiency anaemia: Low iron can reduce healthy red blood cell production and cause tiredness or weakness; Fifolar syrup helps restore the iron supply.
  • Folate deficiency: Low folate can interfere with normal red blood cell formation; folic acid in Fifolar syrup helps support this process.
  • Nutritional support during recovery: The combination may help provide nutrients involved in blood formation when dietary intake is inadequate or recovery needs support.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Fifolar syrup. Do not use it for anaemia that has not been linked to iron or folate deficiency unless your doctor advises it. Tell your doctor before use if you have an iron-storage disorder or receive repeated blood transfusions.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Iron can irritate the stomach and cause queasiness, particularly when the syrup is used without food. Seek advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping it down.
  • Constipation: Iron can make stools harder or less frequent. Increase fibre and fluids if suitable, and contact your doctor if abdominal pain or persistent constipation develops.
  • Abdominal discomfort: Iron may cause cramping, bloating or a heavy feeling in the stomach. Report severe pain or repeated vomiting.
  • Metallic taste: Iron can leave an unusual taste in the mouth after use. Tell your doctor if it persists or makes eating difficult.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or trying to conceive. Use Fifolar syrup during pregnancy when your doctor confirms that nutritional support is needed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Use Fifolar syrup while breastfeeding only on medical advice, especially if the baby receives other supplements.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Take Fifolar syrup by mouth exactly as advised by your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate it from medicines that can interact with iron.

Storage and disposal

Store Fifolar syrup in the original bottle, tightly closed, away from heat, sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date or if its appearance has changed. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of leftover syrup.

Quick Tips

  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack for each dose.
  • Keep Fifolar syrup away from children because excess iron can be dangerous.
  • Dark stools can occur with iron products, but report severe stomach pain or vomiting.
  • Eat a varied diet that includes iron-rich foods such as pulses, leafy vegetables and meat when suitable.
  • Do not start another iron, folic acid or vitamin supplement without medical advice.

Dosage

Overdose

Iron overdose can be especially dangerous in children. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Carbonyl iron provides iron needed to make haemoglobin and new red blood cells. Folic acid and cyanocobalamin help cells divide and mature normally during blood formation. Tocopheryl, a form of vitamin E, is also present as part of the formulation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Fifolar syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and acid-reducing medicines can lower iron absorption, while iron can lower absorption of thyroid medicines, some antibiotics and certain medicines for Parkinson disease. Tell your doctor if you use medicines for seizures or blood conditions so the treatment can be reviewed.

Interactions with food items

Tea, coffee, milk and calcium-rich foods can reduce iron absorption when taken close to Fifolar syrup. Taking it with food may reduce stomach upset but can also reduce absorption, so follow your doctor's advice about timing.
