Medical Description

Ferrical syrup is a medicine used to support red blood cell production when iron and vitamin intake is inadequate. It contains a combination of ferric ammonium citrate, folic acid, mecobalamin, pyridoxine and sorbitol solution. Iron and folic acid provide materials for haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, while mecobalamin and pyridoxine support normal blood cell and nerve functions. Sorbitol draws water into the bowel and may support easier bowel movement. Ferrical syrup is taken by mouth after shaking and measuring the liquid with the measuring device supplied with the pack.

Uses

  • Iron-related low red blood cell production: Ferric ammonium citrate and folic acid supply nutrients needed to make haemoglobin and healthy red blood cells.
  • Iron-related tiredness: Restoring iron supports oxygen delivery to tissues, which may ease tiredness linked to low iron levels.
  • Blood cell and nerve support: Mecobalamin and pyridoxine contribute to normal blood cell development and nerve function.
  • Bowel movement support: Sorbitol can draw water into the bowel, which may soften hard stools and make passing them more comfortable.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Ferrical syrup. Do not use iron preparations for anaemia that is not caused by iron deficiency unless your doctor advises it. Do not use them if you have excess iron stored in the body unless a clinician advises it.

Side effects

  • Constipation: Iron may make stools harder or less frequent, especially early in use. Drink fluids and eat fibre if suitable, then seek advice if bowel movements become difficult.
  • Diarrhoea: Sorbitol can draw water into the bowel and cause loose stools or cramping. Replace fluids and seek help if diarrhoea is severe.
  • Vomiting: Iron and other nutrients may upset the stomach and trigger vomiting. Contact a clinician if vomiting is repeated or you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Abdominal discomfort: Iron can irritate the digestive tract and cause cramping or tummy pain. Seek urgent help for severe or worsening pain.
  • Dark stools: Iron can make stools darker during use. Seek urgent medical help if they are tar-like, contain blood or occur with weakness.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Use Ferrical syrup during pregnancy only on your doctor's advice because iron and folic acid needs vary between individuals.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ask your doctor before using Ferrical syrup while breastfeeding, especially if the baby receives other supplements.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack. Do not drink directly from the bottle. Take Ferrical syrup by mouth as advised.

Storage and disposal

Store Ferrical syrup in a cool, dry and dark place below 30 degrees Celsius, away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children. Close the bottle after use and dispose of expired syrup safely.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Ferrical syrup before measuring it.
  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack, not a household spoon.
  • Keep Ferrical syrup away from children because excess iron can be dangerous.
  • Include iron-rich foods such as pulses, leafy vegetables and eggs if suitable for you.
  • Seek help for tar-like stools, blood in the stool, severe pain or repeated vomiting.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much iron may cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unusual drowsiness. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ferric ammonium citrate supplies iron for haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. Folic acid and mecobalamin help blood cells develop normally, while pyridoxine supports protein metabolism and nerve function. Sorbitol draws water into the bowel and may make stools easier to pass.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ferrical syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and acid-reducing medicines can lower iron absorption, while iron can lower absorption of thyroid medicines and some antibiotics. Use separation only as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions with food items

Tea, coffee, milk and calcium-rich foods may reduce iron absorption if taken together. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about suitable timing.
