Medical Description

Difenac MR Tablets are a combination medicine used for short-term relief of pain, inflammation and stiffness caused by muscle spasm. They contain chlorzoxazone, which relaxes painful muscle tightening, diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, and paracetamol, which relieves pain and fever. Chlorzoxazone acts mainly in the brain and spinal cord to reduce muscle spasm, while diclofenac and paracetamol reduce pain through different actions. This combination is intended for painful muscle conditions that limit normal movement. Difenac tablets are taken by mouth as whole tablets with water and should be used only for the period prescribed.

Uses

  • Pain due to muscle spasm: Tight, involuntary muscles can cause pain and stiffness; chlorzoxazone relaxes the spasm while the other ingredients ease discomfort and improve movement.
  • Muscle-related inflammation and swelling: Diclofenac helps reduce inflammation and swelling in painful muscle conditions, while paracetamol adds pain relief.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it if you have liver disease, a stomach ulcer or bleeding, or have had asthma, hives or facial swelling after aspirin or similar anti-inflammatory medicines. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, heart disease or a history of stomach problems. Do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically advises it.

Side effects

  • Stomach upset: Diclofenac may irritate the stomach, causing abdominal pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Seek urgent help for black stools or blood in vomit.
  • Dizziness or vertigo: Chlorzoxazone can affect alertness and balance, causing dizziness or a spinning feeling. Do not drive, and seek help after fainting.
  • Headache: The combination may cause headache during treatment. Rest and fluids may help, but report a severe or unusual headache promptly.
  • Reduced appetite or dry mouth: Chlorzoxazone may reduce appetite or saliva, leaving the mouth sticky. Seek advice if you cannot eat, drink or swallow comfortably.
  • Rash or raised liver blood tests: A rash can signal sensitivity, while liver changes may have no early symptoms. Stop and seek medical advice for yellow skin or dark urine.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Difenac tablets during pregnancy or while planning pregnancy unless your doctor specifically advises it. Tell your doctor if you think you may be pregnant.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Do not use Difenac tablets while breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically advises it. The combination may expose the baby to its ingredients, and the safety of the full combination is not established.

Driving

Driving

Difenac tablets may cause dizziness, sleepiness, vertigo or vision changes. Do not drive or operate machinery if any of these effects occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol while using Difenac tablets because it can increase sleepiness, worsen stomach irritation and add to the risk of serious paracetamol toxicity.

Directions for Use

Take Difenac tablets as a whole with sufficient water. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet. It may be taken with or without food as prescribed, and taking it after food may reduce stomach discomfort. Do not use it longer than advised or combine it with another paracetamol-containing or anti-inflammatory medicine unless your doctor approves.

Storage and disposal

Store Difenac tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep them in the original pack and out of the reach of children. Do not use them after the expiry date. Dispose of unused tablets according to local instructions.

Quick Tips

  • Take Difenac tablets only for the period prescribed.
  • Do not combine them with another product containing paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory pain reliever without medical advice.
  • Taking Difenac tablets after food may reduce stomach discomfort.
  • Avoid driving if you feel dizzy, sleepy or unsteady.
  • Avoid alcohol and seek urgent help for black stools, vomiting blood, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much can cause severe nausea, vomiting, stomach bleeding, extreme sleepiness, breathing problems or serious paracetamol poisoning. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Chlorzoxazone acts in the brain and spinal cord to reduce signals that keep muscles painfully tightened. Diclofenac reduces the production of substances involved in pain, redness and swelling. Paracetamol reduces pain and fever through a different action, so the combination addresses muscle spasm and related pain.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Difenac tablets work. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention blood thinners, aspirin and other anti-inflammatory pain relievers, steroid medicines, some antidepressants, medicines for high blood pressure, water tablets, lithium, methotrexate, and other products containing paracetamol or chlorzoxazone. Blood thinners, aspirin, other anti-inflammatory medicines, steroid medicines and some antidepressants can increase bleeding; blood pressure medicines and water tablets may affect kidney function or work less well; lithium and methotrexate can reach higher levels; duplicate paracetamol or chlorzoxazone can increase toxicity or sleepiness.

Interactions with food items

Taking Difenac tablets with or without food is allowed as advised. Food may reduce stomach discomfort, but it does not remove the risks of diclofenac or paracetamol.
