Medical Description

Crisavoc Dry powder for injection is an antifungal medicine used to treat serious invasive fungal infection, especially invasive aspergillosis. It contains isavuconazole, which prevents fungi from making ergosterol, a substance needed for a healthy fungal cell membrane. Without this membrane component, susceptible fungi cannot grow normally and the infection can be controlled. The powder is prepared and given through a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with medical monitoring during treatment. It is used for serious infections in people who may have weakened immunity.

Uses

  • Invasive aspergillosis: This serious fungal infection can spread beyond the lungs in people with weakened immunity; isavuconazole helps control susceptible fungi under specialist care.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it with medicines that can cause dangerous heart rhythm changes, including ranolazine or pimozide, unless a specialist specifically directs otherwise. Tell your doctor about liver disease, heart rhythm problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding and all medicines you use.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. Tell the healthcare team about any unusual symptoms after administration.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Isavuconazole blocks a fungal enzyme needed to make ergosterol, an important part of the fungal cell membrane. Without enough ergosterol, the fungal membrane becomes faulty and the fungus cannot grow normally.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Crisavoc works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, do not use ranolazine or pimozide unless a specialist confirms it is appropriate. Fosphenytoin and nevirapine may lower isavuconazole levels, while vinblastine and some transplant medicines may reach higher levels. Also report seizure medicines and medicines that affect heart rhythm.
