Medical Description

Costrum injection is used to correct vitamin B12 deficiency and support treatment of related anaemia and nerve problems. It contains methylcobalamin, a form of vitamin B12 that helps the body make healthy red blood cells, maintain nerve function and carry out normal cell processes. Replacing low vitamin B12 can support blood formation and recovery of nerve function when deficiency is the cause. Costrum injection is given into a muscle by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, and it must not be self-injected. It is used after a healthcare professional assesses the need for treatment.

Uses

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency: It replenishes low vitamin B12 levels when deficiency is linked to poor intake, absorption problems or another medical cause.
  • Vitamin B12-related anaemia: Low vitamin B12 can impair healthy red blood cell formation, and this injection helps restore the nutrient needed for blood production.
  • Nerve problems from deficiency: When low vitamin B12 is linked to numbness, tingling, weakness or other nerve symptoms, treatment supports nerve function and repair.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, methylcobalamin, vitamin B12 or cobalt, do not receive Costrum injection. Do not receive it if you have Leber disease unless a specialist specifically advises otherwise. Tell your doctor about any previous serious reaction to vitamin B12 treatment before the injection.

Side effects

  • Injection-site pain: Soreness may occur where the needle enters the muscle and usually settles; tell the healthcare professional if redness or swelling spreads or pain becomes severe.
  • Dizziness: A brief light-headed feeling can occur after the injection; sit or lie down and rise slowly until it passes.
  • Skin rash or itching: Sensitivity may cause itchy skin or a rash after treatment; tell the healthcare professional immediately and get emergency help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
  • Breathing difficulty: Trouble breathing may signal a serious allergic reaction rather than a minor effect; get emergency medical help immediately, especially with swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. The doctor will decide whether replacing vitamin B12 is needed and which treatment is suitable.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Vitamin B12 treatment may be used when clinically needed, but your doctor should guide the treatment plan.

Driving

Driving

Costrum injection does not usually affect driving, but do not drive if dizziness, weakness, or visual symptoms occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Limit alcohol and discuss regular alcohol use with your doctor, especially when the cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is being investigated.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is administered into a muscle after the healthcare professional checks your condition and treatment plan.

Storage and disposal

Store Costrum injection under the pack's stated cold-storage conditions and protect it from unsuitable heat and light. Do not use it if the ampoule is damaged, leaking, cloudy or expired. The healthcare facility must discard used needles and ampoules safely.

Quick Tips

  • Keep follow-up appointments so vitamin B12 levels and blood counts can be checked.
  • Tell your doctor about numbness, weakness, balance problems or worsening tingling.
  • Mention any previous reaction to cobalt or vitamin B12 products before the injection.
  • Remain seated briefly after the injection if you feel dizzy.
  • Get emergency help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. An extra injection may increase the risk of allergy or other unwanted effects.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Methylcobalamin helps the body carry out chemical reactions needed to process homocysteine, make healthy red blood cells and produce genetic material for normal cell growth. It also supports maintenance and repair of nerve fibres. Replacing a vitamin B12 deficiency can improve blood formation and support nerve function when low vitamin B12 is the cause.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Costrum injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention chloramphenicol, which may reduce the response of blood cells to vitamin B12 treatment. Tell the doctor if you use proton pump inhibitors or histamine-blocking medicines, because they can reduce vitamin B12 absorption from food or oral products, although this injection is given into a muscle.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known.
