Medical Description

Clis syrup is a combination medicine used to relieve dry cough, nasal stuffiness and allergy symptoms linked with a common cold. It contains chlorpheniramine maleate, dextromethorphan hydrobromide and phenylephrine. Dextromethorphan reduces the cough reflex, chlorpheniramine eases allergy symptoms, and phenylephrine reduces swelling in the nose. Clis syrup is used by mouth as prescribed for people who need relief from these symptoms. It does not treat viral illnesses such as a common cold.

  • Common cold symptoms: The combination relieves blocked or runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation during a common cold.
  • Allergy-related nasal symptoms: Chlorpheniramine eases sneezing and runny nose, while phenylephrine helps open a blocked nose caused by swelling.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

The safety of Clis syrup during pregnancy is not established. Use it only if your doctor decides that the expected benefit outweighs possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Information about use during breastfeeding is limited. Ask your doctor before using Clis syrup, especially if your baby is premature or unwell.

Driving

Driving

Clis syrup may cause sleepiness, dizziness or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if any of these occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol while using Clis syrup because it can worsen sleepiness and reduced alertness.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Take Clis syrup by mouth exactly as advised by your doctor, with or without food. Do not use more than prescribed or combine it with another cough, cold or allergy medicine without advice.

Storage and disposal

Store Clis syrup as directed on the pack, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle closed. Do not use it after the expiry date and dispose of leftover medicine according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle well before every use.
  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack.
  • Do not combine Clis syrup with another cough or cold product unless a doctor advises it.
  • Avoid driving or machinery if you feel sleepy, dizzy or less alert.
  • Drink warm fluids and gargle with warm salt water if suitable for throat comfort.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Clis syrup may cause marked sleepiness, confusion, agitation, fast heartbeat, vomiting, seizures or breathing problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Dextromethorphan reduces activity in the part of the brain that triggers coughing. Chlorpheniramine blocks the effects of substances released during an allergic reaction, helping reduce sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Phenylephrine narrows swollen blood vessels inside the nose, which eases nasal congestion.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Clis syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and some medicines for low mood can cause dangerous effects with dextromethorphan; sleeping medicines, opioid pain medicines and other antihistamines can increase sleepiness; other cough medicines can duplicate ingredients; and blood pressure or heart medicines may interact with phenylephrine. Do not combine products unless a doctor or pharmacist checks them.
