Medical Description

Cestel is an oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two active ingredients: dienogest, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, and ethinylestradiol, a synthetic oestrogen. Together, these hormones work to stop the release of an egg from the ovaries and thicken the cervical fluid to create a barrier against sperm.

Uses

  • Contraception
  • Pregnancy prevention
  • Hormone regulation

Contraindications

Do not take Cestel if you are allergic to dienogest, ethinylestradiol, or any other ingredients of this medicine. Avoid this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. Tell your doctor before taking Cestel if you have a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure that is not controlled, migraine with aura, severe liver disease, or cancer of the uterus, cervix, or vagina. Smoking, especially if you are over 35 years old, increases the risk of serious side effects.

Side effects

  • Nausea
  • Spotting
  • Headache
  • Breast tenderness
  • Irregular periods

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Cestel must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, stop immediately and tell your doctor.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Cestel is not recommended during breastfeeding as it may reduce milk production and the hormones may pass to the infant.

Driving

Driving

Some women may experience dizziness or tiredness with Cestel. If this affects you, avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol may increase blood pressure and reduce the liver's ability to process Cestel. Limit your alcohol intake while taking this medicine.

Directions for Use

Take this tablet at the same time each day with a glass of water, with or without food. Swallow it whole, do not chew or crush. Take Cestel continuously without skipping, even if you are not sexually active, to keep hormone levels stable. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is more than 12 hours late, use backup contraception.

Storage and disposal

Store this medicine at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep it in the original container and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.

Quick Tips

  • Take Cestel at the same time daily for best results
  • You may experience spotting or irregular periods in the first few months; this is common and usually settles
  • Avoid smoking while on Cestel, especially if over 35
  • Carry a backup contraception method if you miss a dose

Dosage

Overdose

If you have taken more tablets than prescribed, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately. Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding.

Missed a Dose

If you missed a dose of Cestel, take it as soon as you remember. If it is more than 12 hours late, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double tablet to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The combination prevents an egg from being released from your ovaries (ovulation). It also thickens the fluid in your cervix, making it harder for sperm to enter the womb. Taken correctly every day, Cestel provides reliable contraceptive protection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect how Cestel works or increase the risk of side effects. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially antibiotics, antifungal medicines, or medicines used to treat epilepsy, as these may reduce the effectiveness of Cestel. In particular, if you are taking any herbal supplements containing St. John's Wort, inform your doctor as this may interfere with your contraceptive protection.

Interactions with food items

There are no known interactions between Cestel and food.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
