Inside the lens cells, potassium is the most abundant. The lens itself has more potassium than sodium, which is the opposite of what you find in your blood. This delicate balance of sodium and potassium helps control the osmotic pressure across the lens's outer layer. Osmotic pressure essentially regulates the movement of water, ensuring the lens doesn't swell or shrink too much. A special protein also helps maintain this balance. If the levels of electrolytes in your blood change too much, it can disrupt the natural balance within the lens. This imbalance can lead to the lens becoming cloudy, a condition known as a cataract.
