Medical Description

Bacnil LB tablet is an antibiotic combination used for certain bacterial infections when prescribed by a clinician. It contains amoxicillin and dicloxacillin, which block bacterial cell-wall building, plus lactobacillus, a beneficial bacterium included in the formulation. Amoxicillin and dicloxacillin act against susceptible bacteria, while lactobacillus does not replace antibiotic treatment. The tablet is taken by mouth with water and is not useful for viral colds or flu.

Uses

  • Susceptible bacterial infections: Amoxicillin and dicloxacillin help stop bacteria that cause infection; this tablet does not treat viral colds or flu.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, especially penicillin antibiotics or related cephalosporin antibiotics, do not use it. Tell your doctor before treatment if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or severe diarrhoea after previous antibiotic treatment. This medicine should not be used for viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Amoxicillin or dicloxacillin can upset the stomach when treatment starts. Seek medical help if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotic treatment can disturb normal bowel bacteria and loosen stools. Get urgent medical advice for bloody stools, severe pain, fever, or diarrhoea that continues after treatment.
  • Skin rash: A new itchy rash may reflect sensitivity to a penicillin antibiotic. Contact your doctor promptly, and get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Stomach discomfort: Changes in digestion may cause cramps, bloating, or abdominal discomfort early in treatment. Seek assessment for severe or persistent pain.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or think you may be pregnant. Your doctor will decide whether this combination is suitable.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Amoxicillin and dicloxacillin can pass into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding so possible effects on the baby can be considered.

Driving

Driving

This medicine is not usually expected to affect driving. Do not drive if you feel dizzy, unwell, or affected by an allergic reaction.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Follow your doctor's instructions about food because food can affect dicloxacillin absorption. Do not crush or chew the tablet unless your doctor tells you to. Do not share it with anyone.

Storage and disposal

Store Bacnil LB tablet in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of children's reach and in its original packaging. Do not use damaged or expired tablets. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Use Bacnil LB tablet only for the bacterial infection selected by your doctor.
  • Do not share this medicine with another person or save leftover tablets for later.
  • Tell your doctor about any previous allergy to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or throat swelling.
  • Seek urgent care for bloody diarrhoea, severe stomach pain, or marked weakness.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, or an allergic reaction. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Amoxicillin and dicloxacillin prevent susceptible bacteria from building a protective cell wall, so the bacteria cannot grow and survive. Lactobacillus is a beneficial bacterium included in the formulation and does not kill the bacteria causing the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Bacnil LB tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention warfarin and other medicines that reduce clotting, methotrexate, probenecid, oral hormonal contraceptives, other antibiotics, and live bacterial supplements. Dicloxacillin may make some oral hormonal contraceptives less reliable, while antibiotics may reduce the effect of live bacterial supplements.

Interactions with food items

Food can reduce dicloxacillin absorption. Follow your doctor's instructions about whether to use Bacnil LB tablet with food.
