Medical Description

Avil Syrup is a syrup formulation manufactured by Sanofi. Its generic name is pheniramine maleate. It is from the drug class of sedative antihistamine drugs. It is an H1 histamine receptor antagonist. It works against the muscarinic cholinergic receptors and possesses an anaesthetic effect locally. Pheniramine is an alkylamine derivative of histamine (H1)receptor antagonists. It also has anticholinergic and sedative properties. It works by blocking histamine. A daily therapeutic dose of 3mg/Kg body weight should be maintained. Avil Syrup contains carbohydrates (equivalent to 1.75g glucose per 5ml or one measuring spoonful). So, ruling out diabetes is essential. It can cause children to hallucinate, restlessness, confusion, agitation, etc. It can cause adults to have gastrointestinal problems, dryness of the mouth (xerostomia), urine retention, anaphylaxis (allergic reactions), palpitation (increased heartbeat).

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Avil Syrup is an antiallergic medicine. It blocks the action of histamine by competing with the H1 receptor in the central nervous system. Reduction is the activity of H1 receptors in the central nervous system (CNS) that relieves the symptoms caused by allergic reactions (such as hives, rashes, swelling, insect bite/insect sting). It reduces vasodilation and capillary leakage. This blocking of H1 receptors is also responsible for sedative effects produced by the first generation antihistamines like pheniramine.
