Medical Description

Aprotic syrup is a nutritional supplement used under medical advice to support appetite and food intake when a person is eating too little. It contains a combination of choline, a nutrient involved in normal cell and fat functions, and cyproheptadine, which can increase appetite by reducing the effect of serotonin, a chemical messenger involved in appetite control. Better food intake may support nutritional status, but the syrup is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet. Aprotic syrup is taken by mouth after shaking and measuring it with the device supplied with the pack.

Uses

  • Reduced appetite: Cyproheptadine may increase the desire to eat when reduced appetite makes it difficult to maintain adequate food intake.
  • Poor nutritional intake: By supporting appetite, Aprotic syrup may help people who are not eating enough improve their overall nutritional intake.
  • Undernutrition support: The syrup may support food intake and nutritional recovery in people with poor nutrition when a doctor recommends it.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this product, do not use it. Do not use it without medical advice if you have glaucoma, a blockage in the stomach or intestine, or difficulty passing urine. Tell your doctor if you have asthma, seizures, liver or kidney problems, or are older, because cyproheptadine can cause sedation and other effects. Do not give it to young children unless a doctor advises it.

Side effects

  • Dry mouth: Cyproheptadine can reduce saliva, causing thirst or a sticky feeling. Sip water and seek help if swallowing becomes difficult.
  • Constipation: Reduced bowel movement can occur because cyproheptadine slows some body functions. Increase fibre and contact a doctor if there is severe abdominal pain.
  • Sleepiness: Cyproheptadine may make you drowsy, especially after starting treatment. Avoid driving until you know how Aprotic syrup affects you.
  • Blurred vision: Changes in focusing can occur because of cyproheptadine. Avoid driving and seek medical advice if vision becomes severe or painful.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The ingredient cyproheptadine reduces the effect of serotonin, a chemical messenger involved in appetite control, which may increase hunger. Choline supports normal cell membranes and the processing of fats and other nutrients. Together, these ingredients may support appetite and nutritional intake without replacing a varied, balanced diet.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Aprotic syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor if you use sleeping medicines, anxiety medicines, strong pain medicines, allergy medicines or other medicines that cause sleepiness, because their effects may add to cyproheptadine. Also mention medicines for glaucoma, difficulty passing urine or stomach blockage, because side effects may increase.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can increase sleepiness and dizziness caused by Aprotic syrup, so avoid alcohol during treatment.
