Medical Description

Anemidox capsule is a medicine used to prevent or correct iron, folic acid and pyridoxine deficiencies that can contribute to low red blood cell production. It contains a combination of ferrous fumarate, folic acid and pyridoxine, a vitamin needed for blood formation and nutrient use. Iron supplies material for haemoglobin, while folic acid and pyridoxine support the formation and normal development of blood cells. Anemidox capsule is taken by mouth as a whole with water and should be used for a diagnosed or suspected deficiency under medical advice. It is not suitable for every type of anaemia.

Uses

  • Iron deficiency anaemia: Low iron can limit haemoglobin production and reduce oxygen delivery; iron from Anemidox capsule helps restore the nutrient needed to make healthy red blood cells.
  • Folate deficiency: Low folic acid can impair normal red blood cell development; the folic acid component supports cell growth and maturation when deficiency is confirmed.
  • Pyridoxine deficiency: Low pyridoxine can affect haemoglobin formation and nutrient use; this ingredient helps restore the vitamin when a clinician identifies a deficiency.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Anemidox capsule if you have been told that your body stores too much iron, or for anaemia not caused by a nutrient deficiency unless a doctor advises it. Tell your doctor if you have a blood disorder, stomach or bowel disease, or a history of repeated blood transfusions.

Side effects

  • Constipation: Iron can make stools harder or less frequent, particularly when treatment starts. Drink water and eat fibre-rich foods; seek medical help for severe pain or no bowel movement.
  • Nausea: Iron may irritate the stomach and cause queasiness after the capsule. Taking it with food if advised may help; seek care for repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down.
  • Stomach discomfort: Iron salts can cause cramps, fullness or burning in the upper abdomen. Stop and contact your doctor if pain is severe or persistent.
  • Dark stools: Iron commonly makes stools dark green or black without other symptoms. Get urgent help for tarry stools with weakness, pain or vomiting blood.

Overdose

Iron overdose can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness or collapse, especially in children. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ferrous fumarate supplies iron for haemoglobin production and helps replenish iron stores. Folic acid supports cell division and the normal development of red blood cells. Pyridoxine supports protein metabolism, nutrient use and haemoglobin formation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Anemidox capsule works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and acid-reducing medicines can lower iron absorption, while iron can lower absorption of thyroid medicines, some antibiotics and medicines for weak bones. Calcium supplements may also reduce iron absorption. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate these products from Anemidox capsule.

Interactions with food items

Tea, coffee, milk and calcium-rich foods can reduce iron absorption when used at the same time as Anemidox capsule. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them from the capsule.
