Medical Description

Amlopres 5 Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent the chest pain of angina. It contains amlodipine, a long-acting calcium channel blocker of the dihydropyridine group.

Calcium entering muscle cells in the artery wall is what makes them contract. Amlodipine blocks that entry, so the muscle relaxes, the arteries widen, and the resistance the heart pumps against falls. In angina it also dilates the coronary arteries, improving blood supply to the heart muscle.

Take it once daily at the same time, with or without food. The full effect takes about a week to build. Do not stop when readings improve; blood pressure returns within days or weeks.

Swelling of the ankles, flushing and headache all follow directly from vessel widening. The swelling occurs because amlodipine dilates small arteries much more than small veins, so fluid is pushed into the tissues; a water tablet usually will not help it.

Avoid grapefruit, which raises amlodipine levels. Tell your doctor about heart failure, aortic valve narrowing or liver disease, and report ankle swelling that is marked or worsening.

Stamlo 5 tablets, Amlokind 5 tablets, Amlodac 5 tablets, Amlopin 5 tablets and Amlovas 5 tablets are some other medicines with amlodipine as the main ingredient.

Quick Tips

  • Amlopres 5 Tablet relaxes and widens your arteries so blood flows more easily and pressure falls.
  • Take it at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • The full effect takes about a week, so do not judge it after a day or two.
  • Ankle swelling is the commonest side effect and comes from vessel widening, not fluid overload.
  • Raise your legs when sitting and avoid standing still for long periods to reduce swelling.
  • Tell your doctor about marked or worsening swelling; a change of dose or added medicine often helps.
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice entirely.
  • Do not stop when your readings normalise; blood pressure returns within days or weeks.
  • Tell your doctor if you take simvastatin, as the dose may need capping.
  • Report new, more frequent or more severe chest pain after starting.
  • Keep up dental hygiene and tell your dentist you take this medicine, as gums can overgrow.
  • Reduce salt, limit alcohol, stay active and monitor your blood pressure regularly.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose of this medicine include dizziness, lightheadedness, weak, fast heartbeat or excessive drop in blood pressure etc. Seek immediate medical help in case of an overdose of this medicine.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed taking any dose, take it as soon as you remember if there is sufficient time left for the next scheduled dose. If it is time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not compensate for the missed dose by taking an extra dose. Missing a dose of this medicine can lead to a rise in blood pressure and should be avoided.

How does this medicine work?

Amlopres 5 tablet works by relaxing the blood vessels, thus making it easier for the blood to pass through the blood vessels and lowers the blood pressure. It also improves the blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle and prevents chest pain due to angina.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way Amlopres 5 tablet works or Amlopres 5 itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interactions.
  • Especially, if you are taking medicines such as antibiotics, antifungals, other anti-hypertensive medicines, cholesterol-lowering medicines, medicines for heart conditions and muscle relaxants etc.
  • Other medicines that should be used with caution are immunosuppressants, anti-HIV medicines etc.

Interactions with food items

  • Amlopres 5 Tablet may be taken with or without food, as absorption is unaffected. Choose a time you will remember and keep to it.
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which block the enzyme clearing amlodipine and can raise its level enough to cause marked dizziness and low blood pressure. Other citrus fruits are fine.
  • Reduce salt, which has a direct and measurable effect on blood pressure. Limit pickles, papads, packaged snacks, processed foods and added table salt.
  • Limit alcohol, which adds to dizziness in the short term and raises blood pressure with regular use.
  • A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy supports blood pressure control alongside the medicine.
  • Raising your legs when sitting and avoiding long periods of standing help more with ankle swelling than any dietary change or water tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Amlopres 5 Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent the chest pain of angina. It relaxes and widens the arteries so blood flows through them more easily, which lowers pressure and reduces the work the heart has to do.
This is the commonest complaint with amlodipine and it has a specific explanation. Amlodipine widens the small arteries far more than the small veins, so more fluid is pushed into the tissues than is drawn back out, and it collects in the lowest part of the body. It is not fluid overload and a water tablet usually does not help.
Raise your legs when sitting, avoid standing still for long periods, and mention it to your doctor. Adding a medicine such as telmisartan or ramipril often reduces the swelling considerably, because those dilate the veins as well, restoring the balance. Reducing the amlodipine dose also helps.
Blood pressure begins to fall within a day or two, but the full effect takes about a week to build because amlodipine is long-acting and accumulates gradually. Your doctor will usually reassess after two to four weeks.
Grapefruit blocks the enzyme that clears amlodipine, so its level rises and dizziness, flushing and low blood pressure become more likely. Occasional small amounts are unlikely to matter, but regular or large quantities should be avoided. Other citrus fruits are fine.
No, and this distinguishes it from verapamil and diltiazem. Amlodipine acts almost entirely on blood vessels and barely affects the heart's electrical conduction, which is why it can safely be combined with a beta-blocker and why it does not cause the slow heartbeat those other calcium channel blockers can.
No. Normal readings mean the medicine is working. Blood pressure climbs back within days or weeks of stopping, and the silent damage to your heart, brain, kidneys and eyes resumes. Any change should be your doctor's decision.
Both come directly from the widening of blood vessels, particularly in the skin of the face and in the head. They are most noticeable in the first week or two and usually settle as your body adapts.
Either. Amlodipine's absorption is not affected by food, so take it at whatever time you will reliably remember, and keep to that time each day.
Occasionally it causes the gums to swell and overgrow. Careful brushing, flossing and regular dental visits reduce the risk. Tell your dentist you take this medicine, and report any gum swelling or bleeding.
Mention heart failure, severe narrowing of the aortic valve, a recent heart attack, low blood pressure and liver disease. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and list all your other medicines including anything for erectile dysfunction.
Take it as soon as you remember unless your next dose is nearly due, in which case skip it. Do not take a double dose. Because amlodipine is long-acting, one missed dose has less effect than with shorter-acting medicines, but regular lapses allow blood pressure to rise.
