Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Carbohydrate in the form of dextrose is used in solutions to restore blood glucose levels and energy. Dextrose, a type of carbohydrate, may help to prevent liver glycogen depletion and thus has a protein-sparing effect. Parenterally injected dextrose oxidises to carbon dioxide and water.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant administration of catecholamines and steroids with dextrose infusion can decrease glucose uptake
  • Chlorpropamide, clofibrate, and carbamazepine can enhance the vasopressin effect, leading to reduced renal excretion of electrolyte free water and can cause hyponatraemia
  • Antipsychotics and narcotics can also enhance the vasopressin effect, resulting in the risk of hyponatraemia
