Medical Description

Alusil syrup is a combination medicine used to relieve acidity, heartburn, indigestion and bloating, and to support healing of acid-related stomach ulcers. It contains aluminium hydroxide and magnesium, two antacids that neutralise excess stomach acid, together with simethicone, an antifoaming medicine that breaks up gas bubbles. The antacids reduce acid irritation, while simethicone helps trapped gas pass more easily. Alusil syrup is taken by mouth after shaking the bottle and is usually used with or after food as advised.

Uses

  • Acidity and heartburn: Excess stomach acid can cause burning in the chest or upper abdomen; this syrup neutralises acid to ease those symptoms.
  • Stomach ulcers: Lowering acid reduces irritation of sores in the stomach or intestine and can support healing alongside other prescribed treatment.
  • Bloating: Simethicone breaks up gas bubbles in the gut, helping trapped gas pass and reducing abdominal fullness.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not take it. Ask your doctor before use if you have severe kidney disease, unexplained stomach pain, persistent vomiting, black stools or a suspected bowel blockage. Do not use it to self-treat new, severe or persistent symptoms without medical advice.

Side effects

  • Constipation: Aluminium hydroxide can slow bowel movement and make stools harder. Increase fibre and fluids if suitable, and seek advice if severe constipation develops.
  • Diarrhoea: Magnesium may draw water into the bowel and cause loose stools. Contact your doctor if diarrhoea is persistent or causes weakness.
  • Nausea: The suspension may cause queasiness or stomach discomfort, especially when the stomach is already irritated. Stop and seek advice if vomiting continues.
  • Mineral changes: Excess use, especially with kidney problems, can cause weakness, confusion or unusual muscle symptoms. Seek medical attention promptly if these occur.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring cup supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Take Alusil syrup by mouth with or after food as advised by your doctor. Keep a suitable gap from other medicines because aluminium and magnesium can reduce their absorption.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle well before every use.

  • Keep a suitable gap between Alusil syrup and other medicines as advised.
  • Choose fibre-rich foods and suitable fluids if constipation occurs.

  • Avoid oily or spicy foods if they trigger your symptoms.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause constipation, diarrhoea, weakness, confusion or mineral disturbances, especially in people with kidney disease. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The aluminium hydroxide and magnesium components neutralise acid already present in the stomach, reducing irritation and heartburn. Simethicone changes the surface of gas bubbles so they join and pass more easily. Together, the ingredients address acid-related discomfort and gas-related bloating.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Alusil syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, aluminium and magnesium can reduce absorption of thyroid medicines, some antibiotics, iron supplements and other medicines. Your doctor or pharmacist may advise a separate time for these medicines.

Interactions with food items

Take Alusil syrup with or after food if advised. Avoid foods that clearly trigger your acidity, such as oily or spicy meals. Alcohol may worsen acidity and should be discussed with your doctor.
