Medical Description

Alaspan oral solution is used to relieve symptoms caused by allergies, including sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, itching and hives. It is used for nose, eye and skin allergies, including seasonal or year-round reactions. It contains loratadine, an antihistamine that reduces the effects of histamine, a natural chemical released during allergic reactions. The active ingredient reduces swelling, itching and excess secretions while usually causing less drowsiness than older antihistamines. This oral solution is taken by mouth using the measuring device supplied with the pack, as prescribed.

Dosage

Overdose

Headache, sleepiness and a fast heartbeat may occur after taking too much Alaspan oral solution. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Loratadine blocks histamine, a chemical released during an allergic reaction. This reduces itching, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and skin swelling. Its limited entry into the brain means it is generally less likely to cause sleepiness than older antihistamines, although some people may still feel drowsy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Alaspan oral solution works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, ketoconazole and other antifungal medicines, erythromycin and other antibiotics, and cimetidine or similar acidity medicines may increase the amount of loratadine in the body. Medicines that cause sleepiness may add to reduced alertness.
