Medical Description

Advacef tablet is an antibiotic medicine used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the urinary tract, throat, ears, skin and soft tissues. It contains cefalexin, which stops susceptible bacteria from building the protective cell wall needed for survival. The weakened bacteria then die, allowing the infection to clear. This tablet is taken by mouth and does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Uses

  • Urinary tract infections: Cefalexin helps clear susceptible bacteria affecting the bladder and urinary system when prescribed for this infection.
  • Throat and ear infections: This medicine treats certain bacterial infections affecting the throat, tonsils or ears as the infection improves.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Cefalexin helps control susceptible bacteria affecting the skin or tissues beneath it.
  • Superficial pyoderma: This medicine treats a surface bacterial skin infection that may cause sores, crusting, redness or inflamed patches.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it after a previous severe allergic reaction to cefalexin or another cephalosporin antibiotic. Tell your doctor about any penicillin allergy, kidney disease or previous severe diarrhoea linked with an antibiotic.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Changes in normal bowel bacteria may cause loose stools during treatment. Seek medical help for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.

  • Reduced appetite: Stomach upset may make food less appealing while using this medicine. Seek advice if poor intake causes weakness or dehydration.

How does this medicine work?

Cefalexin stops susceptible bacteria from forming a strong protective cell wall. Without this wall, the bacteria weaken and die, allowing the body's immune system to clear the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Advacef works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, probenecid can reduce cefalexin removal and increase its effects. Tell your doctor about zinc or mineral supplements, blood thinners, other antibiotics, purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine and inactivated cholera vaccine, because absorption, bleeding risk or vaccine response may need review.

Interactions with food items
