Uses
- Adenosine 3 mg injection is used for :
- Normalising irregular beating of the heart (supra ventricular tachycardia).
- Evaluate the severity of coronary artery disease
- Stress test
Contraindications
- Adenosine 3 mg injection is not administered in :
- Known allergy to Adenosine (rare)
- Severe AV block disease (2nd/ 3rd degree) - electrical signals controlling your heart are partially or completely blocked
- Sinus node disease (sinus node of the heart does not function properly to transmit electrical impulses needed to keep your heart beating)
- In asthmatic patients, as it may cause further respiratory depression (irregular breathing, difficulty breathing)

Directions for Use
- Adenosine 3 mg inj is given intravenously by a doctor or a medical professional in a clinic/hospital setting under sterile conditions
- It is a clear, transparent liquid contained in glass vials
- It is given rapidly (within 2-5 seconds) in the most peripheral vein in a continuous flow (use of cannula) or when given in an IV line it should be followed by a rapid saline flush to reach the blood immediately
- The patient is monitored for any severe after effects
- Repeat administration may be advised by the doctor if the desired level of regular heartbeat is not reached
- Proper inspection of the vial is a must before administering. It should be inspected for particulate matter, or any discoloration
- Unused liquid in the vial should be immediately disposed of in medical waste
- Any needles or syringes should be medically disposed of /broken immediately
- The date of expiry should be checked on the label before administering the injection

Interactions with other medicines
- As adenosine is a naturally occurring substance in the body, medication interactions and adverse effects are few.
- Dipyridamole (blood thinner) along with Adenosine 3 mg - reduces efficacy
- Benzodiazepines like carbamazepine (antidepressants) increase risk of heart block
Interactions with food items
- It is advised not to consume anything containing caffeine like tea, coffee or too much chocolate at least 12 hours prior to the administration of the injection as it decreases its efficacy.
