Molecule Description
Phenazopyridine is a pain reliever medicine used in the treatment of urinary symptoms (pain or burning). It acts on the lower part of the urinary canal as a pain-relieving medicine. It relieves irritation and burning but does not cure the infection of the urinary tract.
Uses
- Increased urination
- Pain or burning during urination
- Increased urge to urinate (caused by an infection, injury, surgery, catheter or other conditions that irritate the urethra/ bladder)
Contraindications
When should one not use Phenazopyridine
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Allergic to this medicine
- A condition where causing red blood cells to break down in response to certain medicines or infections or other stresses (G6PD deficiency)
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Stomach upset
- Allergic symptoms like Itching, hives, rash
- Decreased urine output
- Unusual tiredness
- Swelling
- Rapid weight gain
- Fast heartbeat
- Fever with chills
- Shortness of breath
- Symptoms of liver damage: fever, jaundice, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite

Talk to your doctor if
- This medicine may cause discoloration or staining of contact lenses and it would not be possible to remove the stain. It is advisable not to wear soft contact lenses while on treatment with this medicine.

No significant interactions with other medicines are noted. But inform your doctor about all the medications that you are taking.
Interactions with food items
The medicine should be taken after meals.
Dosage
Overdose
The symptoms of an overdose can be decreased urine, fatigue, jaundice, easy bleeding tendencies, rapid breathing, change in heart rate, etc. If you happen to take an overdose of medicine, seek emergency medical care immediately. The effects of an overdose may be lethal and need immediate medical attention.
Missed a Dose
Take the missed dose as early as you remember. If the time for the next dose is close, skip the missed dose and do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
