Molecule Description
Pentoxifylline is a medication primarily used for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease. This condition is characterised by poor blood circulation to the limbs, leading to symptoms like intermittent claudication (leg pain during walking) and rest pain, particularly at night. It works by decreasing the viscosity of the blood, making it less thick and allowing it to flow more easily through the blood vessels. This enhanced circulation helps to alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with inadequate blood supply to the arms and legs.
Before starting treatment with Pentoxifylline, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. You should inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart problems, low blood pressure, or kidney disease, as the medication should be used with caution in these cases. It is also essential to disclose all other medications, supplements, and herbal products being taken, as Pentoxifylline may interact with them. It may potentiate the effects of blood pressure medications and antidiabetics, and may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with blood thinners or certain pain relievers.
The recommended dosage and duration of Pentoxifylline are determined by the prescribing doctor. It is vital to adhere to these instructions and not to stop or modify the dose without professional guidance, even if symptoms improve. Abruptly discontinuing the medication can lead to a worsening of the condition or the reappearance of symptoms. Pentoxifylline should be taken with or after a meal to reduce the risk of an upset stomach. For optimal results, it should be taken at the same time each day.
While Pentoxifylline is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects, including nausea, indigestion, dizziness, or headaches. These side effects are often temporary and may improve as the body adjusts to the medication. It is important to be aware of more serious, though rare, side effects like irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or allergic reactions. If any severe or persistent side effects are experienced, or if an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- You are taking antidiabetic medicines like insulin along with Pentoxifylline, which need to be monitored closely.
- If you are taking blood-thinning medicines like Heparin, Warfarin, and tirofiban simultaneously, then the anticoagulant activity needs to be monitored.
- It can potentiate the effect of medicines used to treat high blood pressure, such as Propranolol and Atenolol, so the dosage may need to be reduced.
- Simultaneous use of Pentoxifylline and Ketorolac, a pain relief medicine, may increase the risk of bleeding.
- Concomitant use of Pentoxifylline and Theophylline to treat respiratory problems, and Ciprofloxacin used to treat infection, may worsen the side effects.
- Other medicines, such as acid-reducing medicines like Cimetidine, Clopidogrel to reduce the risk of heart disease, Abciximab, and painkillers like Acetylsalicylate, should be used with caution if you are being treated with Pentoxifylline.
Interactions with food items
It is advisable to take Pentoxifylline with or after meals to minimize stomach upset.
