Molecule Description
Ornidazole is used for the treatment and prevention of protozoal infections and other conditions like diarrhea, dysentery and pelvic inflammatory diseases (inflammation of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and pelvic area caused by an infection).
Uses
- Treatment of protozoal infections such as giardiasis, trichomoniasis, etc.
- Treatment of Crohn’s disease (when infection co-exists)
- To treat diarrhea, dysentery (amoebiasis), pelvic inflammatory disease
- Prevention of infections after surgery
Contraindications
When should one not use Ornidazole
Allergic reaction to Ornidazole or other medicine belonging to the same family e.g. Metronidazole.

How Does It Work?
Ornidazole inhibits the growth of protozoa by interacting with the DNA of the micro-organism and inhibiting the protein synthesis, thereby leading to death of the micro-organism.

Blood-thinning agents like Warfarin and muscle relaxants.

No specific food interactions are observed.
Dosage
Overdose
Overdose of this medicine leads to confusion, dizziness, impairment of consciousness, fits/ convulsions, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Seek immediately for medical help if you have taken more medicines.
Missed a Dose
If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
