Molecule Description
Losartan+Atenolol is a combination medicine that contains losartan and atenolol as its active ingredients. Losartan belongs to the class of medications known as Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs), whereas atenolol is a beta blocker. It is used to treat high blood pressure and also helps alleviate other heart problems. It serves to relieve chest pain and regulate the heartbeat.
While taking this medicine, it is essential to maintain a healthy diet and engage in regular exercise. It should be taken as directed by your doctor and in the prescribed doses and duration. It can be taken with or without food. Do not discontinue this medicine unless instructed to do so by your doctor. The doctor may also recommend avoiding potassium supplements during treatment, as they may raise potassium levels in the bloodstream.
It is essential to regularly monitor your blood pressure, and your doctor may request some kidney tests during treatment to ensure the medicines are functioning properly. Before using Losartan+Atenolol, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and provide your complete medical history.

- Your blood vessels leading to your kidneys are narrow, or you have a kidney transplant.
- You are suffering from heart failure or any heart disease.
- You have diabetes as it may cause low blood sugar levels and also change the body's response to low blood sugar; you may not experience warning signs of low blood sugar, such as an increase in heart rate, sweating, hunger pangs and headache.
- You have asthma or any other similar breathing problems.
- You have a type of chest pain (Prinzmetal's angina).

- You have kidney or liver disorders.
- Do not start, alter or stop this medicine on your own.
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Angiotensin-II released in the body causes blood vessels to narrow, leading to an increase in blood pressure. Losartan+Atenolol prevents the binding of Angiotensin-II to its receptors, which causes the blood vessels to relax and lowers blood pressure. Losartan+Atenolol also functions by decreasing the heart rate, thereby reducing blood pressure and the strain on the heart.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Sometimes Losartan+Atenolol may interact with other medicines or vice versa. Therefore, discuss with your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbal preparations you are taking.
- Especially if you are on certain medications like blood thinners (warfarin or heparin), anti-cancer medicines, mood stabilisers like lithium, potassium supplements or medicines containing potassium, other anti-hypertensives like water pills (furosemide), medicines for heart-related disorders like digoxin etc.
- If you have diabetes, do not take aliskiren along with Losartan+Atenolol.
- Concomitant use of Losartan+Atenolol and painkillers should be avoided as it may impair kidney functions.
- Other medicines that should be used with caution are anti-bacterial medicines such as Trimethoprim, corticosteroids used to treat the inflamed area of body parts etc.
- Concomitant use of Losartan+Atenolol along with medicines of class calcium channel blockers Verapamil, diltiazem, and nifedipine (for high blood pressure or chest pain) should be avoided.
- Concomitant therapy with dihydropyridines, e.g. nifedipine, may increase the risk of low blood pressure and cardiac failure.
- If you are taking clonidine and Losartan+Atenolol together, do not stop taking clonidine unless your doctor tells you to do so. Abruptly stopping clonidine can cause fluctuations in blood pressure.
- Medicines like Ibuprofen or indomethacin (for pain and inflammation) may decrease the activity of Losartan+Atenolol hence co administration should be avoided.
- Concomitant use of sympathomimetic agents, e.g. adrenaline (epinephrine), may counteract the effect of Losartan+Atenolol.
- Also, you should inform your doctor if you have a planned surgery or vaccination schedule.
Dosage
Overdose
An overdose of Losartan+Atenolol can result in lethargy, missing heartbeats, excessive slowing of heartbeats, swelling of the hands, feet, ankles or lower legs, shakiness, dizziness, increased levels of potassium in the blood, kidney failure, loss of consciousness, sweating, confusion, blurred vision, headache, pale colour, numbness or tingling in the mouth. Seek immediate medical help in case of overdose.
Missed a Dose
If you miss any dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Losartan+Atenolol to compensate for a missed one.
