Molecule Description
Imatinib is an anticancer medicine used to treat certain types of blood cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. It is also used to treat unresectable, recurrent or metastatic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, a rare type of skin cancer. Imatinib contains imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It works by blocking the growth of cancer cells and inducing cell death of abnormal cancer cells, thereby slowing the progression of the disease. Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration of treatment based on your condition and overall health.
This medicine may cause some side effects, including edema (swelling), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, rash, fatigue, abdominal pain, and general discomfort. Most side effects are temporary; however, notify your doctor immediately if you experience rapid weight gain, persistent fatigue, or unusual bruising and bleeding. Regular monitoring may be required to ensure the safe use of Imatinib.
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor about your complete medical history. This includes kidney, liver, or heart problems, thyroid disorders, or if you have had your thyroid gland removed. Also mention any history of hepatitis B infection, as imatinib can reactivate the virus. Always disclose all medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking to avoid possible drug interactions.
Imatinib should be taken exactly as your doctor prescribed. You can take it with or without food, but taking it with meals may help reduce stomach discomfort. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision after taking this medicine. Avoid self-medicating or changing your dose without consulting your healthcare provider.
Store Imatinib at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight, and keep it out of reach of children. Follow all instructions provided by your doctor and report any unusual symptoms promptly. Regular follow-up visits and laboratory tests are recommended to monitor your response to treatment and ensure safety throughout your therapy.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, supplements and herbal products you take or plan to take while using imatinib.
- Medicines that affect CYP3A4: Some medicines can increase or decrease the amount of imatinib in your body. Strong CYP3A4 inducers, such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, rifampicin, rifabutin and St John's wort, may reduce the effect of imatinib and should be avoided unless specifically advised by your doctor.
- Medicines affected by imatinib: Imatinib can affect the levels of some other medicines in your body. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take so that potential interactions can be assessed.
- Blood thinners: If you need treatment to prevent blood clots, tell your doctor. The prescribing information recommends using low-molecular-weight or standard heparin rather than warfarin in patients requiring anticoagulation.
- Do not start, stop or change any medicine, including herbal products, without discussing it with your doctor
Interactions with food items
You can take it with or without food. Taking with meals may help reduce stomach upset or nausea. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as they may affect the way the medicine works.
