Doxycycline+Lactobacillus is a combination medicine. It is used to treat antibiotic associated diarrhoea & intra-abdominal infections. Doxycycline is an antibiotic and lactobacillus is a probiotic, beneficial bacteria that is already present in the intestine of the body. Doxycycline+Lactobacillus is available in the form of tablet and capsule.
Uses
Doxycycline+Lactobacillus is used in the treatment of intra-abdominal infections and antibiotic associated diarrhoea.
Contraindications
When should one not use Doxycycline+Lactobacillus
- If you are allergic to doxycycline or lactobacillus.
- If you are a pregnant women or a breastfeeding mother.

Talk to your doctor if
- You have problems with your liver or kidney
- You develop severe diarrhoea
- You have skin infections.

- You have a condition causing muscle weakness.
- You have Benign intracranial hypertension, a type of brain disorder characterised by severe headache.
- You have porphyria, a blood disorder characterised by severe abdominal pain.
- You have Systemic lupus erythematosus, characterised by weakness and joint pain.
- You are exposed to sunlight too often or your routine requires sun exposure.
- You experience Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, characterised by fever, chill, increased heartbeat and headache.
- Doxycycline+Lactobacillus should not be used in a child below 8 years of age
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Doxycycline works by killing the bacteria responsible for infection and diarrhoea and lactobacillus helps in maintaining the normal bacterial flora of gut.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way doxycycline+lactobacillus works, or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- Especially if you are taking medicines to treat your heart problems, psychiatric illnesses, bacterial infections or are taking medicines like blood thinners, antibiotics, medicines used to reduce the immune response or antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium.
- Use of medicines like isotretinoin along with this combination should be avoided as there is a risk of getting side effects of former medicine.
- The effect of oral contraceptives may be altered by the use of use medicine. An alternative contraceptive measure should be used.
- Use of Methoxyflurane, an anaesthetic with this medicine can result in severe toxicity in kidney.
Dosage
Overdose
Seek urgent medical help if you suspect an overdose.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed any dose of doxycycline+lactobacillus then take it as soon as you remember. If it is already time for the next dose then skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
