Chlorpheniramine maleate+Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a combination medicine. It is used for short-term relief of cough due to running nose, sneezing & throat irritation. Chlorpheniramine is an anti-allergic medicine and dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. Chlorpheniramine maleate+Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is available in the form of tablets, syrup, suspension, oral drops. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about all the medicines and supplements you take and all the conditions or diseases you suffer from before starting chlorpheniramine maleate+dextromethorphan hydrobromide.
Uses
Chlorpheniramine maleate+Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is used to provide temporary relief from sneezing, cough or runny nose due to minor throat and airway irritation which occurs during common cold and other respiratory allergies.
Contraindications
When should one not use Chlorpheniramine Maleate+Dextromethorphan
If you are allergic to chlorpheniramine maleate, dextromethorphan hydrobromide or similar medicines.
If you are taking medications like sodium oxybate, which is used in preventing daytime sleepiness.
Do not take this medicine along or at least 2 weeks after treatment with any medicine like phenelzine, selegiline which are used to treat psychiatric illness or Parkinson's disease.

- Your cough lasts for more than 7 days or is accompanied by fever, rash or persistent headache.
- It is not recommended for use in children below 2 years of age.
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Natural substances like histamine released in our body are responsible for allergies such as sneezing or runny nose. Chlorpheniramine works by blocking the effect of these substances and provides relief from common cold symptoms.
- There are specific areas in the brain (cough centre), which when activated produces coughing. Dextromethorphan affects these areas and deactivates them, thus helping in relieving the coughing.

Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way chlorpheniramine maleate+dextromethorphan hydrobromide works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- Especially if you are taking medicines to treat your psychiatric illnesses, cough, allergy or are taking medicines like anti-histaminic medicines, muscle-relaxants.
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate+Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide should not be taken along with medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) which are used in the treatment of depression, Parkinson’s disease.
Dosage
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, hallucination, nervousness, difficulty in passing urine, fits, fast or irregular heartbeats. Seek urgent medical help if you suspect an overdose.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed any dose of chlorpheniramine maleate+dextromethorphan hydrobromide, then take it as soon as you remember. If it is already time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
