Molecule Description
Balofloxacin is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections, such as bladder or urethral infections. It kills bacteria by stopping them from making DNA, which helps clear the infection. It is important to take the medicine exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if you start feeling better.
Some people should be careful when using this medication, such as those with kidney problems, epilepsy, allergies to similar antibiotics, or older adults. Allergic reactions, such as rashes or swelling, kidney issues, stomach problems, dizziness, or changes in blood sugar, can occur rarely. If you experience any unusual symptoms or severe side effects, discontinue use of the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
Balofloxacin is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, or people with a history of tendon problems linked to this type of antibiotic. Animal studies have shown that very high doses may affect growth in unborn babies; however, these effects are unlikely at the normal doses used in humans. Always tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before starting this medicine.
You should avoid taking Balofloxacin at the same time as antacids containing magnesium or aluminium because they can reduce the effectiveness of the medicine. Also, combining it with certain painkillers or other medicines like theophylline may increase side effects or require dose adjustments. Store the medicine in a dry place at a temperature below 25°C, away from light, and out of the reach of children.

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Balofloxacin works by stopping bacteria from making the DNA they need to grow and multiply. This helps to kill the bacteria causing the infection and allows your body to get better. It is effective against many types of bacteria that cause infections, including some that are harder to treat.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Do not take Balofloxacin at the same time as antacids that contain magnesium or aluminium. These antacids can reduce how much of the antibiotic your body absorbs. Leave at least 2 hours between taking the antacid and the antibiotic.
- Taking Balofloxacin with painkillers like ibuprofen may increase the risk of seizures. Only take this combination if your doctor says it is safe.
- If you use theophylline for breathing problems, tell your doctor before starting Balofloxacin. This medication can increase the amount of theophylline in your blood. Your doctor may need to reduce your theophylline dose to avoid side effects.
Dosage
Overdose
