Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine are substances produced naturally in our system. These substances play a vital role in our mood and behaviour. Any imbalance in these substances can create changes in our mood and behaviour.
Amoxapine reduces the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. Amoxapine also blocks the response of dopamine receptors to dopamine. All this maintains a proper balance between norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. This gives a feeling of well being to the patient.
As some of amoxapine's effects are similar to tranquillisers, Amoxapine works better in patients who have agitation or anxiety along with depression.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Amoxapine may interact with medicines like
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs), such as Citalopram, Escitalopram, Fluoxetine. Taking Amoxapine with medicines like citalopram, escitalopram and fluoxetine will put you at risk of serotonin syndrome. This rare but serious condition is characterised by fluctuation in blood pressure, hallucinations, shivering, tremors and diarrhoea.
- Anti-anxiety medicines like Alprazolam, Lorazepam. Consuming Amoxapine with alprazolam and lorazepam can aggravate side effects like difficulty concentrating, drowsiness, dizziness and confusion.
- Antihistamines like Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine. Combining Amoxapine with medicines like cetirizine and diphenhydramine can cause intense side effects like dry mouth, heat intolerance, constipation, confusion and irregular heartbeat.
- MAO inhibitors like Isocarboxazid, Linezolid, Methylene blue. Taking Amoxapine with isocarboxazid, linezolid, and methylene blue can cause serotonin syndrome. This causes increased heart rate, excess sweating, fever, shivering, stomach cramps and blurred vision.
