Medical Description

Veracal injection is used under close medical supervision for high blood pressure, heart-related chest pain and certain fast or irregular heartbeats. It contains verapamil, a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels and reduces the heart's workload. Verapamil also slows electrical signals through the heart, which can help control some abnormal rhythms. A doctor or nurse gives this injection into a vein in a hospital or clinic while checking blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm.

Uses

  • High blood pressure: Verapamil relaxes blood vessels, which can lower pressure and reduce the heart's workload during supervised treatment.
  • Angina: By reducing the heart's workload and helping blood flow through the heart, verapamil can relieve chest pain caused by reduced oxygen supply.
  • Certain irregular heartbeats: This injection can steady selected rapid rhythms, helping the heart beat more regularly when a clinician considers verapamil appropriate.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive Veracal injection. Do not receive it if you have very low blood pressure, a very slow heartbeat, certain heart conduction blocks, severe heart failure or an irregular rhythm involving an extra electrical pathway. It must not be given with an intravenous beta blocker. Tell the medical team about a recent heart attack or other serious heart condition before treatment.

Side effects

  • Headache: Changes in blood vessel tone may cause head pain or pressure after treatment. Tell the nurse if it is severe, sudden or linked with weakness.
  • Constipation: Verapamil can slow bowel movement, making stools harder or less frequent. Report severe tummy pain, vomiting or inability to pass stool.
  • Dizziness: A fall in blood pressure can make you light-headed, especially when sitting up. Stay supported and tell the nurse immediately.
  • Swelling: Verapamil can cause fluid to collect around the ankles or feet, causing puffiness. Report rapidly increasing swelling or breathlessness.
  • Slow heartbeat: Verapamil slows electrical activity in the heart and may cause an unusually slow pulse. Alert the medical team if you feel faint, weak or short of breath.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or could be pregnant. Verapamil should be used only when the expected benefit justifies any possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Verapamil can pass into breast milk, so your doctor will decide whether treatment or breastfeeding should continue.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive or use machinery if you feel dizzy, sleepy or faint after treatment.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol may increase dizziness and can lower blood pressure further. Avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is given into a vein under medical supervision, with monitoring of blood pressure and heart rhythm.

Storage and disposal

The injection should be stored and handled by the hospital or clinic according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not use it if the container is damaged or the liquid looks unusual.

Quick Tips

  • Remain seated or supported if you feel dizzy after treatment.
  • Tell the medical team about fainting, chest discomfort, breathlessness or a very slow pulse.
  • Provide a complete list of medicines and supplements before receiving the injection.
  • Do not drink alcohol unless your doctor approves it.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much verapamil may cause very low blood pressure, a slow heartbeat, fainting or serious rhythm changes. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

The hospital team will manage the injection schedule. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Verapamil relaxes the muscles in blood vessel walls, allowing blood to flow more easily. It also slows the movement of electrical signals through the heart and reduces the force of the heartbeat. These actions can lower blood pressure, ease the heart's workload and help control some fast heart rhythms.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Veracal injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, intravenous beta blockers must not be given with verapamil; other beta blockers, digoxin, ivabradine and medicines for irregular heartbeats can excessively slow the heart; medicines for high blood pressure can lower pressure further; and medicines that affect liver enzymes can raise or lower verapamil levels. The medical team may need to check digoxin levels.

Interactions with food items

Grapefruit or grapefruit juice may increase the effects of verapamil. Avoid alcohol unless your doctor advises otherwise, because it may worsen dizziness or low blood pressure.
